Pictured is a pale, translucent flowering plant growing in a clump in the forest floor. Decaying brown foliage and some green plants are around it. Found in NW Wisconsin, US.

Here is my exciting find from a walk in my Wisconsin woods yesterday- a Ghost Plant/ Indian Pipe. It is an herbaceous, parasitic, non-photosynthesizing perennial flowering plant. It gets its nutrients from fungi that are connected to tree roots. Weird, but amazing.

On a fallen log surrounded by dead leaves on the forest floor, grows several VERY dark (almost black) cup fungi. They appear goblet shaped, thinner at the bottom and with a large opening at the top. They look like they're meant to collect rain water, they're so open and wide.

Day 74 of posting cool mushrooms every day:

The Devil's Urn (Urnula craterium) is a goblet-shaped mushroom that appears in eastern NA, Europe, and Asia in early spring. It causes a canker disease on oak.

It inhibits other fungi via a mechanism we have not yet discovered.

On a background of leaves and forest, grows a mushroom in moss in the foreground. It has a pale red stem and a very slimy-looking dark red cap. The stem has splotches of yellow on it.

Day 85 of posting cool mushrooms:

The Shrimp Mushroom (Russula xerampelina) is named so because, yes, it smells exactly like seafood! Particularly crab. This smell occurs due to the molecule Trimethylamine.

It grows from the Arctic Circle down to Costa Rica.
