World Book Day coincides with St Piran's Day! Love and war, gothic and humour, batty old ladies and grumpy old men, desert heroes and harems and gorgeous food. The odd bestseller, many languages. Books are magic: your images fly into other people's heads, where they transform and bloom. πŸ’™πŸ“š #books

So, in launching a huge bombing campaign on Iran they apparently didn't plan for:

- Who takes over;
- Interceptor shortages from sustained drone retaliation;
- How to defend US bases in the region;
- Threats to ships in the Strait of Hormuz; and
- How to evacuate Americans with airspace closed.

Made a dash into Truro to sign a huge pile of the pb of SECRETS OF THE BEES. It felt apt on such an historic day for the Green Party, the novel being a heartfelt cry to protect our natural environment, the true and ancient Cornwall, from less scrupulous forces. Great to know it’s selling so well! πŸ’™πŸ“š

About the play | Royal Shakespeare Company Game of Thrones: The Mad King, a new play based on the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin, adapted by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Dominic Cooke.

The RSC are launching 'The Mad King', a prequel to A GAME OF THRONES at Stratford this summer.

"George's storytelling is Shakespearean in its scale and its themes, so the RSC feels like a natural home."

A West End run will follow.

Whoop!

I stomped up to the allotment in the rain and picked some of the few flowers that had dared to bloom. And then crowned Our Lady of the Hellebores.

The next stage is Insurrection Act, canceling elections and Martial Law.

That's the Trump plan.

If u think I'm crazy well you have refused to pay attention to the evidence of your eyes & ears for the past decade.

We have to use all our powers to stop them. Go on offense. Legally & peacefully.

Photo shows a room full of scientists all wearing ffp2/3 respirators of different colours and types.

This is from a symposium of the Worlds leading long covid experts (August 2025) . H/t Charlos on X. This should tell everyone what you need to know. Not one long covid expert without a respirator, no non maskers or gappy surgicals in sight. Experts know it’s airborne and know the health risks.

Curious to see THE WHITE HARE become 'The Storm House' in German. Weirdly, the cover would fit the current work-in-progress better. The fictional Penhallow House in HEART OF SAFFRON is originally Tudor, but one side has a Palladian frontage tacked on - it's a novel about deceptions and facades. πŸ’™πŸ“š

Unbelievably exciting and magical to be able to see the aurora from our own door! We RAN down to the end of the South Quay to get away from the streetlights and just stood there gasping at the majesty of it all. What a privilege. Thank you, universe! #NorthernLights

It's a Blue Monday today - to cheer yourself up I highly recommend AKOTSK (on HBO Max): the first episode of the tale of Dunk and Egg is just gorgeous: funny, tender, beautifully cast and shot. Gritty, grubby heaven. And when the GoT music briefly wafted past, I welled up.

All of these people - Mogg, Farage, Carswell, Jenrick, Hannan and the rest need to be forever reminded of what they backed and supported

Starting tonight (3am UK, HBO Max) George RR Martin's A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS - glorious tales of hedge knight Dunk and his squire Egg adventuring through Westeros. Heart, soul, humour, thrills, beautifully bite-size.
Proud to have published the stories back in 2017. #books πŸ’™πŸ“š

4/ Chatting Shakespeare with Ian McKellen. Breakfasting with the cast at the Chocolate Starfish. Going w Andy Serkis to the climbing wall in Wellington; cooking trout we caught in the river in Viggo's chalet, walking around Edoras with Alan Lee on the day before filming started there. Magic.

3/ I fell in love with the books at 11, and JRRT was my academic & career guide: it was thrilling to step off a plane at Queenstown and suddenly find myself at Hollin; or to drive a temporary track in the wilds and discover the Golden Hall...

2/ An enormous, risky venture, and everyone was committed to getting it right. Armies of costumers, artists, direction & production teams, WETA Workshop, location folk, makeup teams, extras, swordsmiths, voice coaches, horse wranglers, working through all weathers, solving problems on the spot...

For the 25th anniversary, some cinemas are showing the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy in its extended versions. 25 years! I was Tolkien publisher and as Jude Fisher wrote the Visual Companions, and was the only person allowed to take photos apart from the official stills photographer... 1/ #books

Just because we are in mourning for the victims of ICE do not think we mourn any less for the victims of EPSTEIN. We do not forget.
