Unbound/Boundless who no longer have the rights to sell my book are still selling it for FUCKING $4 on Amazon. Talk about some shady fucking shit. Trying to burn through the inventory THEY NO LONGER HAVE THE LEGAL RIGHT TO SELL before they are forced to send me the remaining stock. Weasels.

Also, now that I'm thinking about it, it's also really rude for one editor to believe that they matter more than every other editor out there who might want to publish an author's work.

Do you honestly think that every person sim subbing to you is doing it because they are "too precious"? Or could you maybe have some rational compassion and wonder if some of them are trying to make ends meet? I know a lot of folks who are struggling right now.

It's fine so long as "no sim sub" policies do not become industry standard, but every publisher who uses them makes that a more likely reality. There are people suing because of this in antitrust lawsuits in academia: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

"No simultaneous submissions" is a red flag to me that an editor values their own time over the time of the hundreds, to sometimes even thousands, of people who are submitting to them.

I had a walk today and thought about the relationship between civility, discomfort, and abuse.

Some of you know that “civility” is one of my hard “ugh” triggers. This thread will explain why.

In 2025, my intention is "Community" because I think one of the most important things we have is each other.

Reading other folks posts reminds me of other stuff, like The Sound & the Fury which also had a big impact on me. Metamorphosis, The Yellow Wallpaper, Romeo & Juliet, The Scarlett Letter.

From different classes: Beloved, The Jungle, Lord of the Flies, Of Mice and Men, Flowers for Algernon, Merchant of Venice, Invisible Man, the Bhagavad Gita, Fahrenheit 451, 1984. Beloved I've read a few times since, as Toni Morrison's prose is amazing and it had a big impact on me content-wise.

I thought of another thing: I tack the word "yet" onto the things I haven't accomplished. Some examples of past/present things I've done this with:

I haven't been published. Yet.
I haven't been accepted to my dream market(s). Yet.
No one has written fanfiction about my world/characters. Yet.

etc.

I second Sahsa's response. I also tend to write stories that I know fit the theme and tone of future collections I have in mind, so even if I don't get a story placed for a call, it doesn't feel like, "I'll never get this rando sub call story published now," it feels like, "another piece is ready."
