MIFF Review: Exit 8 loops its protagonistβ€”and its audienceβ€”in a psychologically draining descent - The Curb | Film and Culture Exit 8 is an inventive and repetitive exercise in expanding what was once a simple video game into a character-driven psychological horror. Based on the 2023 adventure game The Exit 8 by developer Kot...

Based on the beloved video game, 'Exit 8' is a very dramatic version of spot-the-difference. I enjoyed it, even if it puts you through one too many loops.

Elio (2025) | Film Review | This Is Film Close Encounters of the Adorable Kind

Pixar returns with a reminder that friendship and community can extend beyond the galaxy. Elio features charming characters, eye-popping animation, and universal themes of love, belonging, and family. A decent return for Pixar.

Ryan Coogler's Sinners mixes Blues, vampires and gangsters: birthing a transcendent masterpiece - The Curb | Film and Culture Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is a Southern Gothic fable that combines music, history, religion, and horror: building into an imaginative, cinematic eruption. 'Sinners' is one of the best films of the year, and we aren't even halfway. I write about Delta Blues, vampires, and a well-realised piece of historical fiction. Special thanks to @nadinewhitney.bsky.social for the edit.

The Accountant 2 improves on the original, but Ben Affleck's ledger still needs balancing - The Curb | Film and Culture The Accountant 2 is a mishmash of tone that has surplus of entertaining laughs but a deficit of consistency and genre coherence. 'The Accountant 2' is back with far less accounting but a lot more laughs. When it's a thriller, it's weak. When it's an actioner, it's passable. When it's a comedy , it's a TOTAL blast. Read all my thoughts for @thecurb.com.au below!🧾

'Death of a Unicorn' is disappointing. Another entry into the genre I call 'Eat the Rich' fatigue - broad class satires that offer nothing original or creative. An enticing premise is wasted on shoddy vfx and bad messaging.

Jason Statham and David Ayer have a formula that, when utilised in A Working Man, sees the lead actor clock back in for another violent round of shift work.

Snow White (2025) | Film Review | This Is Film A newly revised Princess of the People fails to rejuvenate Disney's waning kingdom.

Disney's Snow White's newly revised Princess of the People fails to rejuvenate Disney's waning kingdom.

Not as atrocious as the current review-bombing campaign, but far from good. Gal Gadot, however, is that atrocious.

The Alto Knights (2025) | Film Review | This Is Film Double trouble.

'The Alto Knights' tries very hard to recreate the success of Nicholas Pileggi's previous writing credits on 'Casino' and 'Goodfellas', but even Scorsese would be shaking his head. Double De Niro does not equal double the fun.

I haven't had as much catty fun in a movie since Conclave until I watched Steven Soderbergh's 'Black Bag'.
In channelling a John le CarrΓ© novel, it is a taut, slick chamber piece pairing romance and espionage. Highly recommend!

As technology allows us to escape further and further from reality , 'Eat the Night' is a dark reminder of late-stage capitalism's effect on the real and virtual world. I was captivated as equally as I was emotionally drained.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (2025) | Film Review | This Is Film A victorious and saccharine send-off to a loveable, chaotic heroine

I did not expect to enjoy the last entry in the Bridget Jones series, but I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone's favourite hapless, romcom heroine's final diary entry is witty, charming, and unexpectedly moving. Hugh Grant on fire. Review at @thisisfilm.bsky.social

I admired 'Grand Tour' more than I enjoyed watching it. It uses anachronism and a hypnosis-inducing travelogue form to portray a screwball comedy akin to the colonial romances in the early days of Hollywood. Read my review here at @thecurb.com.au

'Magic Beach' is a well-intentioned experiment that stays playing in the shallows. With a narrative as thin as angel hair spaghetti - It's frustrating at best and a tired gimmick at worst. The craft is admirable.
