John Ivison: Canada's pivot to Europe for trade gains traction as Trump loses momentum Europe Union in talks to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which includes Canada.

The U.K. has surpassed China as our second-largest trading partner. Indeed, while exports to the U.S. have fallen, a rise in trade with the Brits, the rest of Europe and Asia "have more than made up the shortfall."

The Broke Mind Virus at the Border Why Canadians need to recognize the most dangerous American export of all

β€œThe broke mind virus symptoms are unmistakable.

It’s the factory worker cheering for the billionaire who just eliminated their healthcare. It’s the family just one medical emergency from bankruptcy defending a system designed to bankrupt them.

It transforms solidarity into weakness.”

β€œPrincipled negotiation has not failed; it was never on the table.

Good faith is not present.

By opening their mouths, [the Premiers] are violating the most basic rule of negotiation. They are acting against Canada’s interests. They are actively undermining the strategy of the federal government.”

Trump has threatened Canada in all sorts of ways. What does he really want?

I’m not sure how much this is being reported there, but your country has been threatening ours with economic annexation for the better part of a year. Your ambassador suggested that if that didn’t work, missiles might.

Obviously, we’re not much for cheerleading for USA athletes.

If you’re playing fantasy sports I really suggest you spend some time with Claude’s Opus 4.6.

Over the last week I’ve built a draft assistant that syncs with yahoo during my draft, with player rankings based on my league’s unique settings and biases.

It’s been fun and a great way to learn AI.

Agreed. We’ve seen what political interference with the judiciary has done to rule of law in the USA.

I wish we could count on Albertans to keep her in check, but they continue to fail Canada in their incessant quest for petty self-interest.

I really think if we can resist the temptation towards conservatism that comes from those who traffic in fear and base self-interest, Canada can be a light in the world.

That can be our future.

Stay strong in our flexibility Canada.

Liberal Momentum Builds as Carney’s Standing Reaches New High The latest Abacus Data poll finds rising government approval and improved public mood put the Liberals in their strongest position since the election ahead of a pivotal Conservative convention

β€œOne in five Conservative supporters say they approve of the Carney government’s performance, along with majorities of NDP and Bloc QuΓ©bΓ©cois supporters. That kind of cross-partisan approval is rare in today’s polarized environment.”

Carney’s new middle-power alliance model has me dreaming of a trade treaty signed by middle powers (EU/Korea/Mexico/Canada/etc.) wherein a tariff levied against one member by a great power (USA/China) results in retaliation by all.

I’m sure this has already been considered by trade specialists.

2024 - Danielle Smith facilitates sovereignty referendum to appease the wingnut 5% of her base.

2026 - Referendum fails.

2027 - USA annexes Alberta, making it equivalent to Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

Forever - Smith goes into the history books for the biggest political own-goal in modern history.

Make the USA worse to live in than the countries the immigrants are fleeing.

Opinion: How must the world stand up to Donald Trump? Mark Carney’s speech at Davos is a good starting point

Something has cracked in American society, that it could elect so manifestly unfit a person, not once, but twice.

The checks and balances that were supposed to contain him have manifestly failed. (…) the world can have no assurance of any lasting return to sanity in the United States.
