RFK Jr. Is Bad for Canadaโs Health Too | The Walrus
The health secretary has gutted core agencies that safeguard the USโs well-being. The fallout wonโt stop at the border
Given the latest news of RFK Jrโs assault on American healthcare, re-upping this article I wrote for @thewalrus.ca about how his decisions may have terrible consequences north of the border

Itโs an interesting point. Personally, my perception is people just accelerate between speed bumps and the slowing down just occurs in the limited space prior to the bump.
A bigger culprit IMO is paved alleyways. Nobody drives the 15km/h limit in alleys, let alone paved ones.

I see a lot of parallels with providing space for people to choose alternatives to driving.
When municipalities donโt provide safe space to bicycle, they impact our freedom.
And we all love to protect freedom right?

Yes he could do that, but to build something, they need drawings that start with the current conditions before demolition. When an engineer knows what theyโre removing they need to ethically understand what theyโre doing is not causing harm, no?

One question that needs answering is will professional engineers, with their duty to public safety in their design work, agree to do the stamp drawings for the removal of Toronto bike lanes when a judge has ruled that doing so causes harm. ๐ค

Many other metro areas have multiple municipalities beside each other. Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal are examples. Alberta has taken the mega-city approach of always amalgamation, but itโs gone too far. A smaller core city would do just fine, in fact it would be better off.

Itโs the other way around. The suburbs are subsidized by the core. They are a financial drain on the core.

Amalgamate everything north of Yellowhead and west Hwy 15 into St. Albert. Everything east of Hwy 15 and 75 St NW into Sherwood Park. Everything south of Hwy 216 into Leduc.
Set up new regional transit authority and water authority for all 4 cities. Anything else they do their own thing.

It would actually be the opposite. Suburbs are subsidized by the core of the city. Ashley Salvador posted about tax generated by area in Edmonton on reddit a few years ago. it clearly shows the suburbs are not covering their costs.

Horrible news.
Yesterday, a pickup truck driver hit & killed a one-year-old girl in Calgary.
Today, a pickup truck driver hit & killed a nine-year-old girl in Spruce Grove, near Edmonton.
Both happened just outside homes: One in the back alley, on off the front driveway.

Calgary alleys are not pavedโฆ unless enough neighbours sign a petition to have it paved and agree to pay for it.
I wonder if the risk of higher vehicle speeds is ever brought up so residents signing the petition understand that risk?
