Today’s poem is selected by Chen Chen (@chenchenwrites.bsky.social) as part of the 20th anniversary of Read A Little Poetry.

β€œIt will all work out okay” appeared in High Lonesome by Allison Titus, published by Saturnalia Books, 2023. Shared here with deep gratitude.

Despite my general dislike of all things morris I have a total soft spot for the coconutters. The power of childhood nostalgia!

Friends, a little announcement: we’re now accepting submissions year-round for a new essays feature.

We want this to be a space for new and original thinking about poetry and poetics, but also about how poetry fits in or around our lives.

We can’t wait to hear from you!

From NYT article about the increasing use of AI in the classroom: β€œWriting is one of the most challenging tasks for students, which is why it is so tempting for some to ask A.I. to do it for them. In turn, A.I. can be useful for teachers who would like to assign more writing, but are limited in their time to grade it.”

Why even have a brain, any ideas, any ability to express them, any kind of communication with other people, any desire to solve problems or invent anything, any reason to learn, any use for your eyes or your heart, or any reason to teach or create

Resurgence

I step out into the dark where he’s lurking.
Autumnal coat, spindly legs,
paused squat in his quest
for life’s scraps. Dissected
bin bag, egg shells, scant bones.
A beep of my watch. I leave

him behind, find my stride.
I settle my mind to the rhythm
of music from nights in places
I’ll never remember.

Now connect.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Darkness begins to give way.

I run past the tree whose trunk
is swallowing the do not climb sign.
Spring sun floods low mist with gold.
Electric blue sky goes live
with the promise of day.
