--my head canon Azem went crazy and did this not in their right mind. It would have been poetic for the WoL to have been the "one" to end the world and now save it. Anyway Hydaelyn is entirely a primal born for Azem and seeks to awaken them also through the Calamities which is why She allows--

--expense of the entire world. And I reaaaally wish the game narrative went more in depth about how we just let Venat throw all of Etheirys to the wolves when we offered redemption to even the Garleans (while casually dismissing Amaurot as a lost cause without even knowing their society...) cause--

--more strain and a Mute button on the Lifestream and the bandaid wasn't gonna last, so Azem went a little mad (in my head Azems, and to a lesser degree the School of Azem can hear the Lifestream) and came up with this mad plan to try and save the Lifestream, the foundation of all life, at the--
