The moment that you take your belief and make it everyone else's problem, it becomes a problem.

Sadly too many people use it like that - to live in ignorance. So I chose to exit the scene. There's still some part of me that's spiritual, but not in the way I used to be.

Anyway, back to boy posting.

But the issue for me comes in that it's also a tool that is too easily used to manipulate and coerce others into shame-based conformity, and that I can't condone. The ex-Pentecostal part of me still believes that individual relationship with God is best - others will find their own, or they won't.

Despite everything, I don't actually hate organized religion. I did not have the traumatic upbringing a lot of others have with it, and in a world that is as bleak as this one, I feel belief in a power outside of your own can help to make it more tolerable. It also fosters community; we lack that.

When I realized the scripture didn't line-up with the lovely people I knew, I did my own deep-drive into the Bible and started to look at alternative viewpoints of the scripture, as well as debunking things frequently taught about the Bible, and that's ultimately where my worldview broke.

Our pastors would often try and soften the scripture that made them out to be sinners and going to Hell, and the pressure of gender conformity and 'traditional values' was always debriefed in a way that made it sound Not That Bad, but gentle coaxing of conformity is still conformity nonetheless.

The issue I had, largely, was not with the people in my congregation but the scripture they taught. When my group had so many genuinely *good* people in it, why were they spewing such hateful rhetoric? I was always very pro LGBTQ+, even in my youth as a believer, because I unknowingly was one.

I made many good friends, some whom I still occasionally keep in touch with. Pentecostal as a Christian branch pushed individual relationship with God over silly traditions and the importance of church, and I appreciated that about that particular sect. It felt like genuine community, most the time.

I was baptised Pentecostal in the Midwestern USA. Believe it or not, I was actually pretty into it - it was me who got my family into organized religion, not the other way around. My church was full of groups of good people who accepted outcasts like me (goth, questionable sexuality).
