Target already showed their cowardice with a sudden anti-DEI stance to serve Trump.

With ICE, they’ve let them stage on their properties while letting ICE kidnap their own workers ON THE JOB. Plus they let li’l Bovino in to pee while his gang of gun-toting shitheads stand guard. #BoycottTarget

DreamHaven Books owner Greg Ketter emerging from a cloud of tear gas that ICE agents fired into the streets of Minneapolis.

Remember the other day when I was saluting my friend Greg Ketter, owner of Minneapolis’ DreamHaven Books? This is him the following day. Greg will never say this, so I will — now is a great time to buy books from DreamHaven. Support Americans who stand up vs. 🧊. dreamhavenbooks.com

Dear Ms. McLaughlin,
Your recent statements about ICE were dishonest, and I am furious that you chose to mislead the public so blatantly.

What you said was not a difference of opinion or a matter of interpretation. It was a clear misrepresentation of reality. You publicly defended and sanitized ICE actions that are well-documented, widely reported, and deeply harmful. That is not messaging—it is lying.

As someone speaking with authority and visibility, you do not get to hide behind talking points when people’s lives are affected by the narratives you push. Your words actively contribute to fear, misinformation, and the normalization of conduct that deserves scrutiny, not cover.

If you cannot speak truthfully about ICE, you should not be speaking for anyone at all. At a minimum, you owe the public a correction and an acknowledgment of the falsehoods you spread. Anything less is cowardice.

People are watching. History keeps records. And your credibility is already damaged.

Do better—or step aside.

This is what I sent her just now. Feel free to copy and paste it.

In Chicago, We Run Toward Danger Together "Faced with unrelenting state violence, Chicagoans have refused to be cowed," says Mariame Kaba.

My latest is a love letter to Chicago. "I see you stumbling through the stubborn, awkward rhythm of showing up, again and again. I see you fighting alongside people who sometimes frustrate and confuse you, and defending neighbors you may have never met, because you know they’re all your people."

A moodboard of nine images conveys a mysterious and eerie tone of mystery and thriller. Elements include a hand on fingerprint documents, turbulent ocean water, anonymous figures with cryptic text, a spiral staircase, a quote on moral dilemmas, a tentacled creature silhouette, missing person posters, a stormy lighthouse, and a bulletin board with clippings.

— A DROWNING AMBITION —

a zealous journalist turns up missing, so their rival makes it his mission to find her.

he finds her at a strange lighthouse…
she doesn’t recognize him at all…

and there’s a strange monster lurking on the bottom floor…

When their luxury liner sinks, Edith & others are rescued by a passing ship.

But one by one, the survivors disappear...people the crew insist were never on board.

Find the one who's to die for

An agent's guide to
LAST CHANCE MATCH
New adult dystopian romance thriller with horror elements Above view of paradise dock on a beach, blurred, with words overtop.

Pitch:
Calasca’s government uses science to appoint soulmates, but the 0.6% of the population who don’t receive a match face extermination at thirty. A new reality show, Last Chance Match, sets out to change that and gives the matchless another shot at life. Down-trotted waitress, Cera accepts the invitation, but is quickly deflated when she’s paired with the cocky and entitled Ryde. The show takes a dark turn when a fellow contestant is killed after being eliminated, forcing Cera and Ryde to fight for their happily ever after—and to make it out alive. Above view of paradise dock on a beach, blurred, with words overtop.

Comps:
THE VILLA by Ruth Kelly - dating show setting, twisted games, desperation to win
HEART OF THE SUN by Mia Sheridan - 'enemies' to lovers, second chances, dystopian love story
THE KILL FACTOR by Ben Oliver - winning = freedom, life or death consequences, strong female protagonist

LOVE ISLAND - Love Island-inspired dating show
SQUID GAME - games created for a killer time
BLACK MIRROR - dystopian future with sci-fi twists Above view of paradise dock on a beach, blurred, with words overtop.

Snippet:
The silhouette of a woman approaches us, but her flawless skin is a dead giveaway that it’s a humanoid. The older you get, the easier it is to spot them; their skin is free of blemish, not even a tiny scar indented into their bodies. Their eyes are shiny—too shiny—and their smiles lack depth, character, and warmth. Though the government will never admit it, they’ve started to release more and more of these bots into Calasca to act as companions for the matchless.

They’re chameleons, taking on whatever persona they need to hook into you. The most unsettling part about them is how predatory they can be, entering the neighborhoods of the low-end and matchless. They even have a slot on their abdomens for payment.

I shiver when the humanoid’s too-perfect eyes land on me, its bone-chilling grin never faltering.

“Contestants,” it says so matter-of-fact, yet there’s a sweetness to it. An eerie kindness I can’t ignore. God, I hate humanoids.

Dear Citizen of Calasca,
Pack your bags! I am happy to extend an invitation for you to join us on LAST CHANCE MATCH, a new reality holovision program where LOVE ISLAND meets SQUID GAME and BLACK MIRROR. We can promise you’ll find the one who’s to die for.

being an indie bookseller in the helltimes has felt both very stable and very stabilizing, and part of me wishes everyone could be on my side of the counter for a little while, because I think it would help some of you be a little less cynical and doomy right now. so here is my VERY anecdotal data:
