Woman (me) sketching with colored pencils on a beach in Mexico Initial thoughts on “urban” sketching: It’s as hard as I expected in all the ways I expected: The light changes with the movement of clouds and the sun. The waves are of course constantly moving. And I didn’t have as elaborate of a setup as I normally do. It was fun though! I experimented with a different medium than usual, colored pencils, since they’re a little easier to handle than paints without a large surface to work with. It’s kind of like taking a photo but better—you’re capturing a little time lapse rendition of a scene you’re in as a memento you can take with you. The beach spot was also fairly private—my partner took this photo—but I find that I personally don’t really like the feeling of being perceived, especially by strangers, when I’m making art. I did another colored pencil drawing on the plane (will share later) and I had to turn the little spotlight on and couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched over my shoulder. Maybe it’s something you get used to? No one approached me any of the times, and I was equally relieved and offended, lol.

I took a drawing course in college and we’d do contour drawings where you don’t pick the pencil up and just start feeling out shapes until you have a scene. Definitely helped me a lot.

1. Everything is shapes and lines. Including…
2. Negative space. (The shapes between the shapes.)
Don’t say, “I can’t draw XX” (mine was mouths), because that, too, is just shapes and lines.
