If you're a patient, you want to know you're not getting the best standard of care (or even: getting the worst standard of care), as soon as the verdict is in, not wheb the bureaucratic paperology has run its course. 2/2

Here is an interesting project, which - if it finds its way to the right people - has the potential to legitimately help improve public health. The approach to broadcasting the outcomes sounds a bit scary, but ultimately I think it's probably right 1/ #ScientificPublishing #ResearchIntegrity

"Musk and Trump overemphasize the utilitarianism and applicability of science. While I support goal-oriented research, their current reforms are too shortsighted. Science explores the unknown and requires tolerance for failure."

Yearly reminder that the world will not end if you don’t submit your paper or revision before the holidays.

Editors are people too & need a break. The @plosbiology.org team in particular has done outstanding work this year & fully deserves it. We’re mostly off the next 2 weeks.

Happy holidays!

The South African springhare (Pedetes capensis) fluoresces hot pink under ultraviolet light.

The function of the striking patterns and intense colour (which are unique among known biofluorescent mammals) is a mystery.

So pleased to share our new paper on object transport decisions in @natureportfolio.bsky.social Scientific reports!
We found that Goffins' cockatoos choose to carry light objects over heavy objects over short distances, but ignore weight balance cues. Check it out!

At least for non-experts: “AI-generated poems are now ‘more human than human’… participants are more likely to judge that AI-generated poems are human-authored, compared to actual human-authored poems…. participants rate AI-generated poems more highly than human-written poems”

This is figure 1, which shows the process of wound healing. Rakus fed on and later applied the masticated leaves of Fibraurea tinctoria to his facial wound on June 25. On June 26 he was again observed feeding on Fibraurea tinctoria leaves (see photo). By June 30 the wound was closed and by August 25 was barely visible anymore.

A Scientific Reports paper reports observations of a wild male Sumatran orangutan applying chewed leaves from Akar Kuning—a climbing plant used in traditional medicine to treat wounds and  conditions such as dysentery, diabetes, and malaria—to a wound on his cheek. go.nature.com/3WjxGMV 🧪
