Elitist. Traditionalist. Married. I'm not a "Dragon Ball guy" it's just a thing I have a lot to say about. A block doesn't mean I hate you, it just means I know we'll never have anything useful to say to each other.

Because "moderate" doesn't mean anything.

It means the person either isn't informed enough about a topic, or isn't smart enough to have a consistent view or is deliberately being inconsistent as a negative reaction to something foreign.

Men are unhappy BC 40% of us are supposed to die to war or plague every generation.

The agricultural revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

Anyway, I think religions are organic things. If you had a time machine and erased Jesus, Shakyamuni, & Lao Tsu, you'd wind up with basically the same worldviews with the same geographic distribution. Religion is an emergent property, to say one steals from another is to misunderstand the phenomenon

Certainly Egypt and Persia, probably not Vedanta or Vaishnavism or any othrr Hindu variant, at least not directly. I understand why people think so BC Alexandrian mysticism is similar to India but exactly why that's the case isn't well known.

Although again, grain and wine offerings are both near universals in all ancient religions. My default inference is that it's more like a naturally occurring pattern in pre-rational religion. There are lots of them, there's a reason perennialism is a popular philosophy among religious academics.

It's not pre-Christian and it was far more esoteric. Most say the two cults came into being at about the same time. It's far more likely that, if one took from the other, Christians came first, because of the significance of grain offerings in Jewish mysticism and BC it was popular in big cities.

Christians, mostly Catholics, invented the field of comparative religion hundreds of years ago, around the time diplomacy with China started. Parallels between Christianity and other traditions are well accounted for in a professional, academic way. It's not naive to deny that parallels = lineage.

The Eucharist is a bit tough to disentangle because the details seem to change over the first few centuries, but no matter how you look at it, there are references to the practice are from extremely early in the NT, and they didn't source it from the cults of the day.

There were other washing rituals but baptism was primarily a Jewish custom before Jesus.

If your standard for plagiarism is that broad then anything can be considered stolen from anything else. Some patterns are just natural and occur on their own.

Some left leaning "spiritual" types devote themselves to the goddess Kali, the analogue in the Christian tradition would be Lilith. She's an intoxicated demon who turns the world into Hell BC she can't be satisfied.

Is that *really* who you want to serve?

I love comparative religion but it's a but strange when people project Christian ideals onto other gods.

They do say that but it's not in regard to "most rituals" unless by that you mean secular holidays.

They certainly wouldn't say this about the standard liturgical rites.

Similar for me. I think the og anime contains a lot of that original identity too though, not just the manga, but regardless of where you draw the line it's clear modern DB, even w Toriyama, was not the same thing, and with him gone there's no reason for me to prioritize official material at all.

06.06.2025 04:21 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Same actually, but I recognize it from romance anime. It's like a fusion of the two genres. The shonen element is done well but the romance tropes after the first arc are almost painfully copy/pasted from other anime.

The visuals carry it for me.

(In the latter case it remains to be seen if their writing is any good, I asked about their plans/inspirations and didn't get a useful answer, but they have the art style down.)

Maybe if Dragon Ball gets transferred to new rights holders but not anytime soon lol

I feel like good *official* Dragon Ball is over no matter what. A few doujin are passable so that's where my focus is. I like Jijii's AF in spite of its flaws and a group is continuing Toyble's AF too.

Story wise I checked out after the first arc. It's perfect and self contained and a lot that's come since has been stereotypical love triangle romance tropes. I barely remember it.

For me, at the end of the day, if I like it I like it, of I don't I don't. I don't compartmentalize it by Toriyama's involvement, I just include.what I like an exclude what I don't.

And that approval doesn't mean much, BC he admitted in interviews that he didn't fully understand why the original resonated with people in the first place.

I wouldn't say his involvement meant nothing, but it certainly isn't the difference between good or bad Dragon Ball stories.

06.06.2025 03:45 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, Toriysma's involvement in modern DB was always more marketing than anything. It very apparently was not stories he actually wanted to tell, except arguably BoG and Daima. It was more like corporately written stories that got vaguely approved by him.

Honestly, where I'm really torn on Super's return is this - I'd like the Black Freeza stuff in particular dealt with, in particular if Toriyama left anything behind (notes, discussions, plans, etc.) that could be expanded on. Bring Super itself to a proper conclusion of sorts.
