Photo of a monument erected on a grave enclosed by kerb stones. The monument is topped by a representation of an angelic child with wings, holding flowers in her left hand. The first part of the inscription on the pedestal below is given in the post to which this image is attached; the inscription concludes with "Jesus went out gathering flowers, on his way he gathered ours."

#31DaysOfGraves Day 7: Angel

The grave of “Mary, dearly beloved daughter of William and Frances Silvester, died February 22nd 1950, aged 11 years and 6 months” at Tibberton, #Shropshire. A relative, and part of my #OneNameStudy / #SurnameStudy – Mary’s mother was an Atcherley by birth.

Two photos combined in a single image. Top: representations of the four daughters of Sir Richard Knightley and his wife Jane Skenard, on the side of their alabaster tomb; each one standing in a compartment topped with a foliated ogee arch, two with hands together in prayer and two with hands held open. Bottom: Very worn brass representations of the six daughters of Sir Edmund Knightley and Ursula de Vere (both of whom are also represented by larger brass figures on the same stone). The three girls on the left face towards the right, while the three on the right face towards the left. On a long strip of brass below them are their names, which have been transcribed as Jane, Isabel, Jane, Joone, Suzane, and Joone.

I shared pics of the tomb of Richard & Jane Knightley on Day 3 of #31DaysOfGraves. For Day 6, here's a closer view of their 4 daughters (on the North side of the tomb), plus 6 granddaughters (children of Sir Edmund Knightley & Ursula de Vere), none of whom survived childhood, in brass on stone.

A montage of four photos, showing Eurasian Badger cubs (Meles meles) engaged in grooming. The first three photos are each of a single cub, first lying on his or her back and nibbling their chest fur, the second in a sitting position and using a hind foot to scratch, and the third resting on his or her rear end, with all four paws off the ground, nibbling the fur on one flank. The final photo is of two cubs, each sitting and nibbling their fur with their teeth.

In nature, tooth and claw are not always red. Badgers do use both to find and eat their food, but Badger teeth and claws are also employed in the collection of bedding material for their underground chambers—and as combs when grooming their fur. #NationalBadgerDay #Mammals #UKWildlife #MammalMonday

Photo of a Eurasian Badger cub, asleep on a blanket which has a paw print design. The cub's head is to the right, and he or she is lying with their chin on their chest, and with a foreleg beneath their head so that the forepaw covers an eye. We don't see much of the grey-looking fur of the upperparts here, but we do see a lot of the black fur on the legs and underparts, and the long white face with its twin black stripes.

Let sleeping badgers lie. A favourite pic from my visit to the Badger Weekend of Easter 2006 at Secret World Wildlife Rescue in Somerset.

Wildlife Trust launches £300,000 appeal to protect ancient woodland in Buckinghamshire | Berks Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust The Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) has launched its £300,000 appeal to secure the future of Hamgreen Wood, an ancient woodland home to rare bat and butterfly species.

Great appeal here to protect a fantastic ancient woodland in Buckinghamshire. I've just walked through this landscape – the ancient royal hunting forest of Bernwood is being bisected by HS2 – and it is a magical area. Good luck @bbowt.bsky.social! www.bbowt.org.uk/news/wildlif...

Photo of a Eurasian Badger cub (Meles meles) foraging on the woodland floor. The cub is heading towards the photographer, head turned towards the left side of the image. The Eurasian Badger has a white face with a thick black stripe on either side, each one running upwards from the muzzle and enclosing the eye and white-tipped ear. The legs and feet are black, while the body appears greyish or, when the Badger lives in a burrow system (or sett) dug into sandy soil as in this case, brownish.

if dog years are an actual thing, how come vets charge full price for really old dogs? My mutt is about fifteen, so in dog years he is well and truly a pensioner and be should be getting free prescriptions and what have-you. Not glasses obviously, I'm not stupid. Hector Barnfeather, Hull

And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak
And I seem to find the happiness I seek

Photo of a belt, with its buckle, and several belt holes visible. The Bee Gees song may in fact have been For Whom the Bell Tolls. I often mishear things, for comedic (and I use that term very, very loosely) purposes.

Not sure whether or not you can confirm this, but I think I once heard a song released by the actual Bee Gees which was called “For Whom the Belt Holes”?

Two images combined. Left: a photo of a wall-mounted memorial tablet, made of wood but painted to look like stone, on which five members of the Atcherley family are remembered (Robert of Marton, died 1758; Richard of Wem, died 1766; Richard of Marton, died 1766; Jane, died 1773; Elizabeth, died 1836). Right: an enlarged part of the first photo, showing part of the red and gold (or, in heraldic terminology, gules and or) Atcherley arms at the top of the memorial tablet and the crest above; the bird, which is red but has open, gold-coloured wings, faces towards the left and holds a lily in its beak.

More heraldry for the #31DaysOfGraves Day 5 theme: Bird.

Back to my #OneNameStudy / #SurnameStudy for this one, and the #Shropshire church of Myddle St Peter where many of the Atcherleys of Marton Hall are buried and remembered. The crest above the Atcherley arms is a demi-bustard holding a lily.

The inscription below reads: In affectionate remembrance of Jane, the beloved wife of Joseph Jones, of Waters Upton; who died January 17th 1901, aged 71 years. Not visible in this crop of the photo is the inscription below for husband Joseph, "parish clerk and sexton of this parish for 32 years," who died 21 Mar 1907 aged 76.

My Waters Upton #OnePlaceStudy began as a very small OPS covering the ‘residents’ of St Michael’s churchyard. Looking over the photos I’ve taken there, I see I missed a good one for Day 1 of #31DaysOfGraves: Flower. Jane Jones (née Evans) and husband Joseph settled at Waters Upton around 1863.

I cannot help myself imagining these trees as a married couple. Decades spent together watching the days pass, the seasons pass & the years pass. Alone on this small hill, overlooking some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe, if not the world.
