...and trimmed and layed a length of hedge that separates the raised former lairage from the main path. Hedge management and scrub control will be ongoing in this area for a few sessions.

Looking Northwards over the pond. The once overhanging Willow stumps can be seen below the conservation layed Holly and Hawthorn.
A closer view looking Northwards across the pond showing the layed Holly and thorn and on the right a cleared patch of Snowberry. The pond is getting a lot more light now.
Looking through the new gap to the cleared Snowberry patch. #invasiveplants
Looking through the new gap gives a view over the pond.. Theconservation lay has produced a good thick hedge already but there's more to be done yet.
We continued with the conservatin lay of Holly and Hawthorn on the Northern side of the reservoir pond at #AshawncuttingLNR and......

Start of the day and before the start of the rain. On the orchid shelf for more scrub clearance.
End of the session,it's opening up nicely but there's a lot of prostrate Ivy to grub up as the next stage in grassland resoration. Still more srub to clear and some felling of larger trees.
Plenty more to go at to le direct light get to the ground. It gets a bit steep here . The top of the bank is the plateau grasslandso it'll be connected.
A tough mornng's work with bowsaws and loppers on the very steep bank up to the path along the top of the spoil bank. Slippery in the wet!!
We missed the very worst of storm Bram this morning at Newbold quarry but still felt the heavy downpours that came and went. Every time we thought about packing up it stopped for a bit!! The orchid shelf grassland extension is getting larger and enthusiasm counts for a great deal.

I just waited until someone came up the path to get the flight pic. This bird is accustomed to some disturbance and just waits high up on a perch before gliding back down to feed. Bonus was it stepping onto the path before taking flight. Egrets are seen more these days than before in UK

Conservation sometimes tumbles down to gardening. We should work with nature not against it. Change is a constant.

Looking across the pond towards the gap as we left it on Thursday.
End of the session ,after a good clear out to make space for Holly saplings to fall into the first 3 are down and still connected . We layed a Hawthorn over from right to left too . Well it's not a hedgelaying competition just doing what's practical!!!
View from the other side showing pleached stems making a new living hedge. To be continued working to the right laying over to the left....mostly!!
Nearby hedge got a trim too before it turns into a line of Hawthorn trees. Some brash from the thinning around the hollys has been added to it.
See ALT for a description of today's (rainy) work party at #AshlawncuttingLNR. Conservation lay of Holly underway and nearby existing hedge trimmed .

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from OkjΓΆkull to Ok (jΓΆkull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
