TB peeps- I'm updating the (hour-long) lecture on all things TB that we give to our master's students on the Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases module @lshtm.bsky.social. Out of curiosity, what new innovation/finding/knowledge from the past year do you think the students most need to hear? Thanks!
One of my bugbears in the English language is the word 'by' before a deadline that is given as a date but no time. Is that including that date? Is that before that date? Confused!
Some preparatory reading for my & Molebogeng Rangaka's upcoming @ucltb.bsky.social/@tb-lshtm.bsky.social World TB Day panel 'Should high-income country institutions have a declining role in TB research?' Really looking forward to a detailed discussion!

I'd have thought there must be methods for curve-fitting where you can reduce reliance on a single datapoint whilst retaining it in the dataset.
Not that I believe in removing datapoints that are outliers, BUT <is suspicious>
- diverts into policy being dependent on the available data
- starts yelling about all science being political
- ends with a rant about race being a social construct
At least this should be... engaging?
Me, writing a talk for my old college's science society, to a mixed audience of alumni and current students:
- starts with examples of when science has and has not influenced policy and the ins and outs of that
- continues with when policy hasn't influenced practise
Oh, wow.
This is honestly one of the proudest moments of my career. Go team (including our brilliant lecturers and tutors)! π₯³
For the last four weeks, @ellenlbradley.bsky.social, Palwasha Khan @dopapus.bsky.social & I have been running the Statistical Methods for Epidemiology module @lshtm.bsky.social for 180 students. Today the students gave us the most beautiful handmade card:
If I'm remembering correctly, in undergrad one paper copy of relevant articles for a lecture was left in a specific place. If you wanted to read those articles, you were supposed to go to that place and then photocopy the copy.
Thank you, too, to some excellent reviewers who made space to prioritise our piece!
Impressed/astounded to have submitted a paper on 19th Dec and to have received initial reviews back 6th Jan. Really thorough ones, too. Even aside from various country's holidays, we've had many experiences recently of peer review taking 3-6 months! Journals: this is how to keep academics happy...
Has anyone actually got a copy of this policy/memo from Trinity Hall, Cambridge, before my level of irate goes truly apocalyptic?

EXTREMELY proud of my friend Prof. Berit Lange @ideberitlange.bsky.social doing her inaugural lecture today. Wishing I could be there in person! Congratulations!
This, I have to see.
Don't we all love free-form article submission that genuinely is free-form?
Form: oh, you want a space between those two paragraphs? <laughs maliciously>
It's one of those days where I'm despairing about how beautiful my grant application looks until I put it into the funder's form, and then how all my careful formatting is stripped out and there's nothing I can do to fix it π
Very proud of my PhD student Katherine Hill for her Union conference presentation on comorbidities and PTLD today!
Delighted to see the celebrity Henry Reider talking at the Union conference opening succession this morning.
Oh, and also @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social π
As well as working in tuberculosis, some of you will know the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is one of my passions, so it was nice to have The i newspaper reach out yesterday to talk about EBV and lupus. We really need to be getting more impetus behind EBV work. inews.co.uk/news/autoimm...
Fancy a PhD at the interface between one of the biggest existential threats ever faced by humanity and tuberculosis? Then come apply!
Agree phrases like those mentioned feel like a requirement to get funding. I don't feel we can penalise people for using them.
<hands you my task list>
The phrase that's been going round my head for several months?
One impossible thing at a time.
