I think Druckmann’s nastier impulses in 1 were reigned in by his co-director Bruce Straley. Unfortunately for the franchise (but probably fortunately for him) Straley left Naughty Dog and didn’t work on tlou 2.
I liked tlou1 a lot despite its flaws (which are more apparent after the mess that was 2) because it had moments of optimism and somewhat grey morality. Tlou2 abandons any coherence and instead declares “righteous murder is totally understandable but also bad…sometimes… maybe???”
Call me a hopeless optimist but I just didn’t believe that we could be more than 20 years post-zombiecalypse and humanity are still stuck messing around with cults and organising petty vengeance killings on each other. Girl, the zombies!

While it’s more of a thriller/drama, I highly recommend checking out The North Water as well - with the content warning that it depicts the horrors of Victorian whaling in all its gory detail
They are actually working on a third series, but yes season 2 was such a massive disappointment despite a great premise

It’s a must watch for horror fans.
I actually think the mini-series is a big improvement on the book, because it excises a lot of the weird racism, homophobia, misogyny and general misanthropy of the original novel (as in, yes the characters in the story are bigots, but you can really tell Simmons is as well)
