I visited the HIV/AIDS clinic at Mengo Hospital in Kampala, Uganda today just as clinic administrators learned the news of PEPFAR's suspension. Here's the real-time impact: The medicines on the shelves have to stay there and cannot be given to the patients who have come for treatment, and on Friday, the clinic will suspend its 26 staff members for three months without pay. With 9000 patients, the clinic is one of the largest and oldest in the country, going back to 1997. Instead of being on the brink of an AIDS-free generation, we are now facing the prospect of a new generation, especially adolescents, carrying the virus. la this really the goal of America first? #mengocares #friendsofmengo #pepfar #historicchristchurch
I don't think most Americans understand that with ARVs, PrEP, & prevention of mother to infant transmission, we are on track to eradicate HIV/AIDS. If it continues, Trump's suspension of PEPFAR will end that & bring back HIV as a death sentence for millions.
