Great Relearning – 20th Century Is Over by Tom Wolfe Tom Wolfe In 1968, in San Francisco, I came across a curious footnote to the psychedelic movement. At the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic there were doctors who were treating diseases no living doctor h…

In 1987, Tom Wolfe fretted over a threat to established institutions by a group that "sought nothing less than to sweep aside all codes and restraints of the past." He blamed "the hippies." One wonders what he would say about our current political plight. matiane.wordpress.com/2021/11/30/g...

My beef—well, one of—is how “popular historians appropriate the work of academic researchers to gain sales and notoriety, pretending they did all the work themselves.

Opinion | Students Want the Liberal Arts. Administrators, Not So Much.

"The tragedy of the contemporary academy is that even when traditional liberal learning clearly wins with students and donors, it loses with those in power."

Book cover with various kinds of evidence of family history arrayed around the author and title, the latter is _Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America_. The kinds of materials include printed texts, manuscripts, a red book (shhhhh that figures largely in the Introduction!), a watercolor family record, Fraktur, gravestone, and a sampler. One repeated text says "born free, born free (etc)"

It’s been a long time coming… so thrilled to share the cover (and Oxford UP website last in 🧵) for my book, _Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America_, pub date 7.2.25 (but will ship, so they say very enticingly, mid-June. 1/ #VastEarlyAmerica 🗃️

Our colleague, @provatlantic.bsky.social , came up with a great anti-AI phrase: “Leave History to people.” Can we make this go viral? @kawulf.bsky.social @dwaldstreicher.bsky.social @danmandel.bsky.social

The Academy was founded by John Adams during the American Revolution.

Every institute should be fighting back.

Millions of Americans stood at the barrel of a gun to help protect what Trump is destroying now.

So, ICE isn’t actually going after gangs and drug-dealers? Who would have guessed?
