Thus, they surely think, such terrible evil as he committed will no longer exist. But in reality, what survives is the anonymous structure, the style, the bureaucracy, the “form,” the system… what is properly “facelessly human.” Which is evil in itself.

And the most satanic of all: once Maciel is dead, it is harder to give evil a human face. To dissolve his memory into nothingness—the wager of the Legion—is the most malevolent thing, because by erecting him as a scapegoat, there is no longer a "causa efficiens".

This shows that it was not only “an evil being,” namely Maciel (though surely a thousand demons dwelled within him), but a satanic socio-ecclesial system of criminality.

What kind of society allows a being so evil to operate for so long, in full view of everyone nearby?

I cannot stop thinking that when the Gospel uses the word “legion,” it is to name a multitude of demons.

Both clericalism (the belief that the ecclesial hierarchy has spiritual privileges before God) and a perverse conception of God, used to manipulate and control, are the most complex and significant ingredients. Added to these are the psychological, the economic, and the social.

It was decades of criminality in the name of God. Hundreds, thousands of victims who came face to face with Satan. It is chilling to think about what might still be happening today under the same mechanisms.

Particularly grave are the “theological” causes of the problem:

The testimonies of the victims are the most valuable part of the HBO documentary on Maciel.

We have the duty to listen to them and to help ensure that what happened is known and made public. Evil must be exposed. The victims must be heard.

Tanto el clericalismo (pensar que la jerarquía eclesial tiene privilegios espirituales ante Dios), como una concepción de Dios perversa, utilizada para manipular y controlar, son los ingredientes más complejos e importantes. Además está lo psicológico, lo económico y lo social.

Fueron décadas de criminalidad en el nombre de Dios. Cientos, miles de víctimas que se encontraron con satánas. Es espeluznante pensar en lo que hoy mismo puede seguir ocurriendo bajo los mismos mecanismos.

Especialmente graves son las causas "teológicas" del problema:

Los testimonios de las víctimas son lo más valioso del documental de HBO sobre Maciel.

Tenemos el deber de escucharlas y de ayudarlas a que se sepa y se publique lo ocurrido. El mal debe exhibirse. Las víctimas deben ser escuchadas.

No hay que apegarse ni siquiera al desapego.
