I think the general public understood the version used better.

I get that, but it’s still better to allow them for everyone than to have to explain to normal users why they can’t use them.

Those few percent who use the commandline a lot can always keep their filename structure space-free to make it easier for themselves.

Not dissing VFAT, btw. As a hack it was quite clever, cheaply creating a much-demanded feature on top of an age-old system that worked well enough most of the time and was reasonably backwards compatible.

As was Microsoft’s speciality, come to think of it.
