Not just the emotional question (will this ruin my year) but…is it readable or crazy dry/dense?

Legit question Zack:

I have this book. I have many times considered reading.

Should I?

Disclaimer: I worked for M and E circa 2014-15 and found them to be very smart and nice enough guys.

Or I guess β€œpolarization” is an answer. But I use quotes because I feel like that word has rapidly lost all meaning and is a catch all scapegoat for everything.

Anyway. These dudes were so esteemed and now (prob in part bc I’m on bluesky and not twitter) it’s all pitchforks for them.

What I’m saying is: were these three dudes and their ilk just Obama-era creatures who are now in a new landscape where their views are more closely interrogated?

Or like…does massive success somehow fuck with your politics?

Or…..I don’t know.

And before you come for me, yes I get that some subset of the left always had beefs. I get it. But seriously the anger is much bigger now. And I’m not saying that’s wrong.

Ok so the fact that Ezra and Matt Y. and Nate Silver were all beloved around 10 years ago and now have fallen out of favor along a bunch of the left of center crowd…

Is this because (a) times have changed or (b) they changed?

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

Like I can see drunk 26 year old me deciding singing a horrible song about a redwood tree is good stupid obnoxious fun.

And she’d be RIGHT.

Massive immigration raid on Chicago apartment building leaves residents reeling: 'I feel defeated' The Department of Homeland Security said federal agents with Border Patrol, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested 37 people in the raid.

One of the more harrowing tales of an ICE raid I’ve read: β€˜β€œIt was heartbreaking to watch,” said Watson. β€œEven if you’re not a mother, seeing kids coming out buck naked and taken from their mothers, it was horrible.”’

Folklore was good but I recently saw the video for Von Dutch and thought I'd pull something from punching the air so hard.

But like final point: it’s true you don’t NEED a college degree for some jobs. But a lot of interview and application skills are only picked up at college career centers. Which is a shame! Make sure HS kids know this stuff then!

03.10.2025 14:05 β€” πŸ‘ 23    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Dude my mom was IN one (postal worker) and I wish we had sat down and talked about it. I didn’t know either!

(Also I learned about sewing and cooking and basic tools at home. I think a lot of kids do. I didn’t learn about job stuff there.)

03.10.2025 14:00 β€” πŸ‘ 20    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah sewing and cooking were fun. Yeah table saws were cool. But I would have used the hell out of this course.

03.10.2025 13:59 β€” πŸ‘ 22    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

I propose a practical HS course like home ec or shop except it’s job skills.

How to apply, how to interview, how to negotiate.

But also how to defend yourself: how to document. What unions do. What your rights are.
