Received pages of constructive comments from 3 journal reviewers. Academia is being squeezed by narrowing public budgets, right wing suspicion of education, and degrees as credentialisation. But mad respect for so many people I'm honoured to call colleagues, even the anonymous ones.

So this is how empires fall. One bad leader after the next, takeover by oligarchic cliques, backing war and genocide, antagonising allies, losing in the trade and production stakes to rising powers and losing their s*** in the process.
