Asked a guy with dementia this morning what gave him hope. He responded "I think a lot of people were feeling that way before the last election and unfortunately it didn't work out that way," which is both a non-sequitur and indicative of just how deep anti-Trump sentiment runs.

Ironically you don't even have to spend billions. A better ground game/targeted outreach in Black communities in Milwaukee, Detroit and Philadelphia could have averted this whole mess.

Remember as well what I said about this the other day: Every time Pritzker, Newsome or whoever does this successfully, it creates an incentive to do it again. Criticism is a self-reinforcing cycle.

But again, and I'll leave it here, I think I see some self-sustaining and self-reinforcing processes at work. We will be in a very different place after Trump leaves office, that's for sure. I at least am hopeful that it will be a better place, or at least on its way to one.

In the near-term, I don't really know who emerges as the voice of this new politics. AOC, maybe, but that's the fun of politics — sometimes you just don't know what's going to happen next.

Walz was already powerful on the stump, but could turn into something truly extraordinary if he chooses to be propelled by the assassinations in Minnesota.

Keep an eye on Harris and Walz. She could be a formidable candidate in 2028, particularly if she owns up to some of her mistakes in supporting Biden.

We are already starting to see that. People are talking about Gavin Newsome in his better moments, but I'm particularly interested in Pritzker. I actually thought Harris and Walz were effective in conveying the message. They probably would have got over the top without Biden's drag on their ticket.

What has to happen is the creation of a narrative to sell the idea that all the features of Trump's misrule are of a piece, and must all be resisted/counteracted: the corruption, the authoritarianism, the rabid partisanship, the bigotry and misogyny, the insanity...

Last but not least, as Kevin Kruse points out, there are an awful lot of people out there who don't know that corruption, authoritarianism and rabid partisanship aren't normal: bsky.app/profile/kevi...

And because the anti-Trump coalition is so broad, it will of course be difficult to keep everyone on board. Will economically stretched suburban moms support Trans rights? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Of course, there are lots of risks involved here. As @simonrosenberg.bsky.social recently pointed out, it's going to be a very long-term project to bring America back to something like workable.

If you hear echoes in that of the original Progressive movement or the New Deal project, you're not wrong. I have a feeling that the pendulum might be swinging back that way. 🤞

I mean, talk about hopeful! I am hopeful that we're coming into an era where Reagan's question of whether the government can help is replaced with the question of *why* the government isn't helping, and what can be done to change that.

If you want to think of it this way, it may be that we're experiencing the shock wave of finally leaving behind the central idea of Reaganite politics: that government *can't* help you because it's too focused on helping Those People.

Given all this, it's possible to conceive of not just a new liberal/progressive coalition, but fundamentally a new politics in the U.S., centered on government responsiveness to citizens' needs.
