Workers of the Science News Media Guild will conduct a 24-hour #strike on Wednesday, 11/5. This comes after our members voted to reject the Society’s latest contract proposal. Our members previously voted by 92% to authorize a strike against the @society4science.bsky.social, if necessary.

Some science seems silly, but it’s still worthwhile The Salmon Cannon and the Levitating Frog contends that curiosity-driven research helps us understand the world and could lead to unexpected benefits.

Happy pub day to @biologycarly.bsky.social! I reviewed her latest book, The Salmon Cannon and the Levitating Frog, for @sciencenews.bsky.social's June issue. I love "silly" science! www.sciencenews.org/article/some...

The WORK WE DO is important & we should have a say about WHERE WE DO IT! We're asking for the choice to work remotely full-time no matter our location, to think and write in the environment that best supports our focus & productivity! We proved this works, with flying colors, during the pandemic.

If a workplace made some employees return to the office to "build culture" and that decision then fueled the rise of a union, maybe some rethinking is in order🤔

@society4science.bsky.social, your workers know what a thriving workplace looks like. Please trust us! #FAIRCONTRACTNOW!

In the exactly 1 year I’ve worked at @sciencenews.bsky.social, I’ve edited hundreds of stories, moved our team over to a new story management system, helped interns who’ve come and go, and YET the contract negotiations that started before my first job interview are dragging on. That’s a choice!

I'm glad people are still finding my @sciam.bsky.social article from five years ago helpful. Another example of how science saves lives. Stay safe out there, everyone!

Now, more than ever, the work that my colleagues and I do at @sciencenews.bsky.social matters. But as the days go by without a fair contract, we wonder if @society4science.bsky.social values us and our work. Do you value good science journalism? Then support the workers of Science News Media Group.

I've been working at @sciencenews.bsky.social for a little over 1.5 years now, and the contract negotiation between the @sn-media-guild.bsky.social and @society4science.bsky.social has been dragging on for most of that time! FAIR CONTRACT NOW ✊#unionstrong

It’s been 500 days since we unionized. Overall, we are not satisfied with the amount of progress made during negotiations. We do not have a sense of when we will have a contract.

But we’re not going anywhere ✊. #union #workersrights

Narwhals may use their iconic tusks to play Videos show narwhals using their tusks in several ways, including prodding and flipping a fish. It’s the first reported evidence of the whales playing.

Hello, new followers 👋 I'm a science journalist based in DC, now temporarily at @sciencenews.bsky.social. I specialize in neuro, health & biomedicine, but I cover everything from measles to narwhals. (Both stories came out today!)

Thanks for joining me, & many more stories TK!

The mood is ‘uncertain, anxious’ at 2025’s first big U.S. science meeting Scientists are losing funding and even their jobs under the new Trump administration. Researchers at the AAAS meeting shared fears and coping strategies.

Last week, @astrolisa.bsky.social headed to the local-to-her meeting of the AAAS to report on how scientists are reacting to recent federal funding cuts — just one of the many awesome things about having a distributed workforce. www.sciencenews.org/article/defu...

It's true, please donate to the Open Notebook, science journalism has been getting its ass kicked lately. Also, the site has fantastic resources for journalists on any beat, not just for science writers.

I was just catcalled while checking the mailbox. I only stepped outside for five seconds. Why does this happen? I’m so mad.
