Queer historian researching non conformity around sex and gender in Mainland Britain 1850-2018, but also interested in political violence across Europe and Soviet history - as well as, of course, cute cats. Banner artwork is by Anastasia Trusova.

This is terrifying news. Damned if transfolk disclose and damned if they dont.
The man said he felt "sick" and "dirty", adding he felt it had "[taken] away his manhood" and made him "look stupid" in front of his friends :I
Wait thats me! It was a great conference and so many different interesting research topics!

Big bumble bee scooped on yellow flowers to move them off a path with a white hand in frame holding the flowers
A smaller tired bumble bee on a white hand being carried off the road, blurry picture as moving in a less sunny area
Ah the time of year i need to head anywhere 30 mins early as i will see a tired bee resting on a path or road and need to help em out

We're not talking about reasoned debate, free speech, or however you may justify it - it's an ongoing widespread hate campaign legitimising real people being violently attacked in the street for the 'crime' of existing
A new investigation has revealed significant lobbying efforts by gender critical groups. π

Tried to do some craft projects after working on the current paper, all went terribly. Cant tell if its a bad omen or if i got all the 'bad' out failing to sew a crotch right
20.06.2025 21:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0An interesting thread explaining historical periodisation as
"discretionary, but not arbitrary"
I could, and would, make the case that calling a period "The Renaissance" falls into a similar trap as "the Dark Ages", despite the fact that of course multiple renaissances happened.
Would not recommend moving house during PhD, I am so behind my plans and all with a conference paper due soon!!!

We believe the Supreme Court β which disgracefully refused to hear from trans people before its decision last week β has placed the UK in breach of its obligations under the Human Rights Act.
So weβre readying a challenge β join us:
goodlaw.social/xpme
In response to today's supreme court ruling, we want to urge any researcher in Trans Histories to consider a proposal to our new Queer & Trans Histories series - because research into Trans histories will help to shape Trans futures: manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/series/queer...
#TransRights
The speed at which I suddenly became informed on Malta after the court ruling today was truly impressive. Its hard to focus on research when the world is collapsing and transphobia is growing more and more. I love all my transgender siblings please be kind to yourself in this time.

.. it often feels like pockets of trans communities are miles away with the turbulent seas of transphobia and cisnormativity not letting us feel each others love.
I may not be a premodern historian most of the time, but this paper truly let me fall in love with a manuscript I have never read
- What could a Trans Book History Look Like?... to consider ourselves part of a 'community of touch' with the objects we handle allowing us to share 'connections across time and space' is truly beautiful for a community often living in isolation, despite a rich culture of art and shared knowledge...
02.04.2025 20:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Another day on my historiographical research train, another word learnt - between tribadism and codicology my vocab has never been so refreshed!
On a different note J.D.Saragan's paper on trans history in relation to book history was heart warming to read
Beautiful paper by Onni Gust on Transgender history, the concept of creatures in 18th and 19th century Britain. Truly moving to consider transgender histories in relation to 'echos and resonances' over identity
29.03.2025 15:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0thats gender queer folk naturally challenge. A lot of LGBT+ culture and communities are based in biological determinism and trying to be included in with the 'in group' rather than undermining the system that determines some identities are less than others

28.03.2025 16:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Being a historian right now is being horrified by the news but knowing it is important to still bear witness to it. Between the breaking of due process in the US and Israeli soldiers lynching Hamdan Ballal and continuing to commit a genocide, it clear to see Fascism is only getting worse

08.03.2025 13:11 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Text from Feinbergs pamphlet 'Trans gender liberation. A movement whose time has come'. Direct text is as follows: there are other words used to express the wide range of "gender outlaws": transvestites, transsexuals, drag queens and drag kings, crossdressers, bulldaggers, stone butches, andeogynes, diesel dykes or berdache - a European colonialist term.
Going over some of Leslie Feinbergs work and once again arguing gender outlaw is a cool term we should use more π #queerhistory #transhistoty #lgbt

'History is filled with examples of people changing genders or living between genders'
I recently found out about Margery/John Young who practiced medicine and who had two wives. Their story was posthumously related in The Tatler in September 1710 (attached). #LGBTplusHM25 #queer ππποΈ
