Seems to me that medieval medicine was safer than 19th century "patent" medicines. Hamlin's Wizard Oil 50-70% alcohol! Dr Thomas's Eclectric Oil (not a typo) “alcohol, chloroform, tinctures of opium, hemlock, & turpentine”!
