Ruth Simpson, an author, historian, community leader and founder of the US's first lesbian community centre was born #OTD.
She recorded the history of the early gay rights movement in her 1976 book From the Closets to the Courts.
Most Frankenstein movies are about the hubris of man, but #TheBrideMovie takes it a step further by asking, "What do we do with the fuckmess they've left behind?" This is one of the most daring and original films of 2026 and one of the best monster reimaginings of all time.

Prince Manvendra Kumar Singh Gohil makes headlines as his coming out begins to hit news outlets: he is, probably, the 1st openly gay prince in the world.
In 2000 he started the Lakshya Trust, which supports education around HIV, and LGBTQIA+ issues in India.

Intelligence analyst turned whistleblower Chelsea Manning is released from prison #OTD. She was jailed for refusing to testify against wikileaks founder, Julian Assange.
Chelsea previously shared around 750k documents to wikileaks, exposing unethical behaviour.

Torquato Tasso (born #OTD) was on the brink of being crowned the King of Poets by the Pope. Although largely forgotten today, for c.300 years he was one of the most widely read European poets.
His poetry played it straight, his letters reveal his love of men.

ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) begins to coalesce after Larry Kramer (known for his play The Normal Heart) gives a speech at Manhattan's Lesbian and Gay Community Centre, calling for an AIDS activist group.
You know the best way to kill AI? Don't use it. Don't buy it. Don't share it. Don't give the people who use it your labour or your money.

Robert Mapplethorpe's photos are instantly recognisable. In Just Kids, Patti Smith described his approach: "He worked without apology, investing the homosexual with grandeur, masculinity, and enviable nobility."
He died #OTD due to complications with HIV/AIDS.

As well as an artist and activist, Monica is a Navy veteran and published sci-fi author too!

Divine is remembered for her fearless performances, barbs, quips and her unique perspective.
