I mentioned how folks on LinkedIn are now bodying the CEO brained posts. Love to see it.

I'm also seeing some big crash outs too. Both from entitled brainwormed people and some genuinely frustrated professionals.

It's very tough out there, work wise. Take care, help where you can.

I love great spin because I do believe this statement is true: very few people bought GDC tickets and then backed out, because for the people most at risk in the US right now a GDC trip is years of non-refundable salary. A lot of companies and people never bought tickets, though.

Hairy games:

Games whose first half is coherent and streamlined, but then the second half is a series of short extensions to the first half that are unrelated to the main game and to each other

Fez, Animal Well, Void Stranger are all hairy games

"As a user, I want to get something done without the system getting in the way"

That's it. That's the axiomatic and most fundamental user story there is.

Everything else must spin off from this.
Anything that contradicts it must be discarded.

Man we never got another game like this one, did we?

The whole vibe + brawler/shooter mechanics in a Ghost in the Shell-like anime.

I miss it.

(Cont.)

Dark pattern the final pieces so the end user ends up "fat fingering" most of the time, charging more in the process, making an already annoying process (getting ads) more unbearable (final step of enshitification: screw the end user)

28.01.2026 13:50 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Very much enshitification process:
Ad network shows my ad, I pay little every X impression, pay big on conversion (install). Ad is basic. (Ad business gives value)

Ad extra steps to get more out of people posting ads while demanding more complex pieces (screw business partners)

(Cont.)

28.01.2026 13:50 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Yes. That is basically it.

And I get it from the ad network side. Your impressions yield very little earnings if they don't convert, so add extra steps where conversion or partial convertion (go to store) can happen. Nickel and dime there. Playable ad was played? Get a cent...

The term comes...

How long does it take for users to do a "cool" thing in your system?

Don't waste people's time!

An abstraction of my Time To Hadoken game design term but applied to a broader UX mentality.

If you're resistance, if you're opposing something much larger than you - your biggest resource is morale. Celebrate your wins no matter how small, because they are proof, because Gods don't bleed, because every small win underlines that the struggle might be there tomorrow, but it is not forever.

See those are hard to avoid and to make players feel better about.

That's what I mean by inevitable frustrating moments. You can't also pile up more frustration by having players spend so much time in unnecessary steps, splash screens, etc.You need that "frustration credit" for those inevitabilities

27.01.2026 13:13 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

Valid. We do have ways to just detect and start the game off in the most feasable performance tho. It's just UX mentality.

I'm not saying LOCK people in that first fight. Hint to an options/settings prompt if needed.

There's no silver bullet, but at least reduce the average bad experience for all

I think gAI at game jams is *particularly* fucking gross. Game jams are all about celebrating creativity and cooperation. They're about trying a new skill, or working with someone new. They're about celebrating the joy of creation in all its messy, buggy, and most importantly, human glory.

Yeah it happens.
You forget the first time after you played long enough.

But in my case, the friction was so absurd for me that I couldn't beleive I was playing what was then considered the Coke and Pepsi of the FGC.

You came to these games to FIGHT and your worst friction should be "this char is not my main" but you understand they're the defaults.

after the fight? Roll the logo, move to main menu. Boom. Like a James Bond movie that starts with a bang.

Gonna have to look at Merfight's first time user flow then 😅

That's my main gripe in general: first time playing.

The main trigger for the OG rant was both SFV and MK11 I think.

My hardest take on that is: No logos, no intro, you start in a fight of Ryu v Ken/Sub-Zero v Scorpion. Cold open style

CHARLES RAFFERTY
The Problem with Early Warnings

People don't like to leave a party unless the house is actually on fire. Even then, if the flames are far enough away to be pretty, they'll finish their drink, take one more pass at the hors d'oeuvres.
How things happen has always been unclear. Hurricanes begin in a place where no one lives.
Agents of the government start to wear masks. Fascism is a word my neighbors won't use yet. They are following
the law, they say, and the sirens are coming for someone else.

And also it's just training ground for an eventual Substack? IDK..
