A big thanks to @charbelelhani.bsky.social who gave a great hybrid talk in our lecture series yesterday! He gave insights into his work with communities in Brazil and talked about pragmatist explanations for partial overlaps between knowledge systems.

Em suma, toda cautela é pouco. Não minem sua humanidade, sua capacidade de pensar e sua afetividade virando dependentes de IA. E não percam a suprema oportunidade de alcançar uma boa educação usando IA como muleta. Vale da graduação ao doutorado ao pós doutorado à vida toda.

Terminam com argumento da promoção da preguiça e das perdas incalculáveis de usar IA em vez de aprender e em vez de pensar, similar ao argumento sobre peer review de um texto mais antigo que já já compartilharei aqui.

É interessante pensar em como a ciência de algumas décadas para cá também prioriza resultados e obter argumento análogo ao que eles fazem sobre educação.

Não é duvidoso que IA possa contribuir para a capacidade critica. É evidente que não contribui.

O texto tem alguns problemas de modalidade dos argumentos. Está claro que LLMs não podem pensar. LLMs coletam informações produzidas por humanos e misturam de diferentes maneiras. Não pensam, não criam. Lembremos do célebre argumento da sala chinesa de Searle.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) domain of multidisciplinary academic inquiry that dates back to the mid-20th century. It has more recently become a successful marketing term deployed by large tech companies to describe a host of automated and semiautomated processes. Given that the purposely underdefined and hype-fueled meaning of AI has taken over more academic definitions, we limit our use of the term to capturing social trends and impulses rather than for referring to a scientific body of work.

First activity in my period as visiting researcher in the Netherlands. It was the colloquium of the Descartes Centre, University of Utrecht, where I am currently as a Senior Fellow. Very happy with how it went.

This if the cleaning ever starts. By the time it might begin democracy, justice, education, science and much more, including human intelligence, will be gone. And then... There will be no way back
