I love data so it's v pleasing to be able to see the results of the Irish Garden Bird Survey for my small suburban garden over 4 years. Sparrows dominated in 2021/2 but every year since then the numbers of Goldfinches has grown & everything else dipped. Has a surprise visit from 4 Siskins yesterday!

Tobar Cholm Cille, or St Colmcilleβs Holy Well, is set high on the hills above the beautiful and historic valley of Glencolmcille in County Donegal.
It forms part of the Turas or pilgrimage route that traverses the valley in honour of the famous saint Colmcille (also known as Columba).

Two taxidermy birds building a nest in a tin can
Irish hedgerows are protected by an annual ban on cutting from 1 March to support nesting birds. These European Robins from Crumlin, Dublin are countryside birds from 1902 and a tin can will do. National Museum of Ireland - Natural History @nmireland.bsky.social #SpeirGorm

Earlier this year I figured that my 20 year old home-made nestbox was looking the worse for wear and put up two new bird boxes. Just in time apparently, as the old one didnβt make it through the last storm. Itβs been home to at an average of one nest a year!

I've joined the other by-election candidates on the left in co-signing this letter condemning the vile racist abuse being directed at Labour councillor and fellow by-election candidate Helen Ogbu
We cannot let this kind of abuse stand in Ireland.
Trump thinks he can do regime change on the cheap. With no US boots on the ground.
This doesnβt work. Whichever civilian leader tries to take over still has to face the entrenched interests of the IRGC.
Since this is existential for IRGC, they will fight to the death.

Can't stop laughing at a story my friend told me yesterday about going to meet a work contact at the gates of Trinity. He went up to another waiting man and said "Are you Michael?" "Yes" "Will we go for a coffee?" "Sure." Over a coffee he realises it's not the Michael he's meant to be meeting.
