this is both why tumblr users find reblogs so important (otherwise only your personal followers or people cruising the tags will see it) and why they get really grumpy about people using instagram style algorithm seeking tagspam.

when trying to discover new posts instead of just looking at what my followers have brought me like cats bringing me gifts, i go direct to the tags itself.

tumblr dashboard preferences with “best stuff first”, “include posts liked by the blogs you follow”, and “include based on your likes” turned off. “include followed tag posts” and “enable colorized tags” are turned on.

if you’re set up like this and looking at your following page and it’s still full of steve/other ships you don’t want to see, then that content is coming from inside the house (your followed users) 😅.

tumblr’s algorithm is basically an optional experience which is probably why it sucks. i basically never look at “for you”, i am only ever on “following”. i also have turned off every kind of recommended post in the dashboard settings except allowing for stuff from my followed tags.
