Here’s my (frighteningly vulnerable!!) follow up on my reporting that exposed a white nationalist active club.
On the professional and personal costs of this work:

Ontario's Ford government revamping FOI law to "shield politicians from scrutiny." The FOI regime in Ontario needed improvements. This is not that.

This is an absolutely shocking proposal that would disrupt the very foundations of democratic accountability in Ontario #Onpoli #cdnfoi
A Canadian journalist documents a group of white nationalists who’ve been meeting at a gym in Montréal, unbeknownst to the owner of the business.

Thrilled to join the CAJ as a part time coordinator, where I'll help get the new climate journalism training program online and support the other amazing programs.
I asked IRCC about their new media policy requiring journalists to register and receive approval from the government in order to get questions answered
They told me if Jeremy Appel had a problem with their rules deeming him not to be a "bona fide" journalist, he should talk to them directly himself
Less than an hour after The Hill Times contacted IRCC with questions on March 6, Appel received a follow-up email from the department reversing its decision and has launched a review to ensure alignment with best practices and “the media’s evolving needs.”

This had me counting. Before Frances was a colleague at The Globe, she was a journalism prof of mine – I think 22 years ago 😬

Having similarly dealt with far-right characters I’ve reported on engage in stalking / harassing behaviour to the point where lawyers needed to be engaged, I can say Canada’s laws are completely insufficient to deal with these problems and I have zero trust in the legal system to protect journalists
The Tyee is proud to have published this important investigation by @rachelgilmore.bsky.social. We condemn this egregious harassment of a journalist for doing her job, and have offered support as she deals with this disturbing situation.
Rachel, you're not alone. No journalist should ever be intimidated like this for doing their work in service of the public's right to know. EVER.
