It's also a good dye plant: the yellow is almost too bright, but makes a lovely green if overdyed with indigo. Alum mordant for the yellow.

Amanda drives an ancient "electric brougham", which she bought for a pound, in Margery Allingham's 'Sweet Danger' (1933). She charges its battery with power from the watermill in the village, & it goes for five miles, "two and a half miles out and two and a half miles back" on each battery charge.

My husband's rented rooms in Bristol in 1984 had a bath like this (with an ancient, scary gas geyser to heat the water).

Replica of a medieval surgical instrument designed and made by surgeon John Bradmore to remove an embedded arrow.

...Prince Henry unwisely lifts his visor, and days later at Kenilworth Castle surgeon John Bradmore retrieves an arrowhead from the back of his skull with an instrument of his own devising.

And yet trying to find out from our local medical practice whether we need a tetanus booster after an injury takes multiple phone calls, great determination, and no objection to being made to feel like a hypochondriac for asking ☹️

If you are interested in Constantinus Africanus from the point of view of studying the brain, Anne Jeavons' PhD thesis from the University of Reading, 'Concepts and treatment of disorders of the mind and brain in medieval England: The impact of the work of Constantine the African' (2023) is online.
