happy anniversary to the day my wife forgot that 3/14 was the day we first started dating and when i asked her if she knew what day it was she paused for a moment before guessing "...pi day?"

welp it's been a minute since i've done one of these and a lot of y'all are new; sorry about that

but if you can't handle me at my "the wealthy duped us into pretending the pandemic was over so they wouldn't have to pay to keep us alive" you don't deserve me at my "dragon quest 5 is the best one"

the most insulting thing over the past several years has been the frequent implication (and occasional outright pronouncement) that people continuing to give a shit about covid are *choosing* to do so instead of being increasingly backed into a corner by choices other people are free to make

i also know talking about it carries a certain risk of me being held up as another sad example of someone choosing perpetual isolation after a long-concluded pandemic broke his brain, but my options are potentially endangering my chronically ill wife vs. *not doing that*

there was never a choice

i know i can't keep covid out of my house forever (it didn't *have* to be an inevitability, but we as a people agreed to *make* it one, and there's not much i can do about that)

but i can at least say that when it does happen i did my goddamned best to not be the reason

i've *long* ago stopped expecting anything of anyone else, but as long as all the above remains true i see no legitimate reason to stop living that 2020 life myself

it'll continue to fucking suck and i'll continue to wish i was done

but no matter how long that takes, i'll continue to not regret it

there are things about covid that are just as true now as they were years ago: the vaccine (while important and useful!) is not very protective against infection, long covid is a not-insignificant and potentially debilitating risk that accompanies each infection, and asymptomatic transmission exists

on 3/13/2020 my family went into quarantine to avoid covid

6 years; well over half my son's life

it has been and remains the worst period of my life by a huge margin - if anything it gets a bit worse each year - but as much as it fucking sucks and i wish i were done i don't regret a second of it

whenever people pulled the "clearly observable economic hardship is nothing in the face of This One Graph indicating everything is Good, Actually" routine, especially around the election, i never understood what they thought they were doing

even if the data were 100% accurate they're still assholes

if someone goes "so much for the big tent" at the idea of not being in charge of the tent anymore it mostly just sounds like the only value they see in the tent is their ability to be in charge of it

bringing up the "big tent" like this is interesting because losing a primary doesn't *remove* someone from the tent, it just makes them a regular asshole hanging out in the tent with every other democrat who isn't a sitting member of congress, which i guess would be a fate too dire to contemplate

there is snow falling on the last bit of snow left from the blizzard a few weeks ago that days of 70+ degree weather had not yet melted, and again this is all cool and normal and not at all the kind of weather god would blight people with in the Old Testament for forgetting his birthday or whatever
