Beavers from above.

It’s far easier to appreciate the full impact of beaver activity from the air.

What can seem boggy, messy and muddy at ground level to some is, from above, a thriving mosaic of habitats engineered by nature’s most industrious ecosystem architects.

Beaver lodges increase biodiversity

Beaver lodges aren’t just piles of sticks and mudβ€”they’re finely engineered homes that double as biodiversity hot-spots🦫🌿

As traffic continues to rise and road networks expand, we must find more effective ways to protect our amphibian neighbours.

Ensuring their survival helps preserve the vital biodiversity and ecosystem functions they support.

Despite our best efforts, it was heartbreaking to see that 52 amphibians were still struck by cars.

Road mortality is a leading cause of the decline of Britain’s amphibians, and initiatives like "Toads on Roads," while invaluable, are not yet carried out on the scale we need.

This wouldn’t have been possible without the training, advice, and equipment so generously provided by Perthshire Wildlife, Tay ARG, and Amphibian and Reptile Conservation.

370 Amphibians Moved

Over 14 hours, across 20 nights in March, we were able to help 370 toads, frogs, and newts safely cross our street to reach the wetlands below and spawn.

We even recorded the first presence of the Great Crested Newtβ€”a European Protected Speciesβ€”in our area!

Despite our progress, there’s still much work to be done to fully restore the species in Scotland, England, and Wales.

But, we must move faster if this native keystone is to be restored at a scale that can truly help tackle the biodiversity and climate crises.

We’ve come a long way since then, and I hope this mischievous kit is now thriving with its own territory and family.

Looking back, 2017 feels so, so long ago. At that time, beavers being recognised as native and gaining protected status in Scotland was still over 18 months away and felt improbable. Wild beaver releases in the Cairngorms and protection in England was completely unthinkable.

Happy #InternationalBeaverDay!

This cute footage of a kit annoying and playing with who I thought was its dad was taken in August 2017. It was the first real close-up footage I’d ever captured of beavers in the wild.

Beaver ponds in agricultural landscapes can reduce E. coli concentrations by 95%, a new study finds.

With river quality declining, demand for sustainable solutions is rising & research from Stirling University highlights how beavers can help tackle pollution.

Last night, as we removed the grate to rescue another pair of toads at the bottom of the gully, we were amazed to find a second pair already ascending the ladder to freedom.

Ladders Save Lives

Our street is an amphibian migration route. While patrolling over the last few weeks to move toads, newts, and frogs safely across, we discovered large numbers falling into deep gully pots where they couldn’t escape without help.

To unlock their benefits, we now need widespread population expansion - it’s time to normalise this native species.
