I really can't recommend familiarizing yourself with the things that live and grow around you enough. It's immediately grounding to be able to recognize individual plants/bugs/animals and have some understanding of their relationship to each other and to you. It makes day-to-day life feel richer

The default gendering effect is also present outside of publishing and into adulthood. Eg observing a non-human character or animal of unidentified gender and referring to it as male: “such a round boy!” etc.

It’s surprisingly difficult to train yourself out of!

This is really interesting and worth considering by all in children’s book publishing. Is it possible that absent female characters (and therefore autonomy, personality and empathy) in boys’ play and storytelling impacts how they form lifelong opinions around gender?

I used to be quite open to the prospect of a futuristic medical implant that could detect cancer cells and any other issue before we actually felt symptoms. Even little things like telling us when we needed to drink a glass of water would be handy!

Collected a bat today that had fallen victim to the stuff. The fly paper has painstakingly been removed by an experienced bat carer. Hopefully, she hasn't ingested too much glue while trying to free herself.

We have always made delightful little guys.

🦇 Keep bats in mind when you are gardening. Think 'Bed & Breakfast', i.e. providing roosting spaces (like a bat box) and plenty of food for them to eat (by having plants that attract insects at night).
