it’s beautiful to think One Battle inspired a whole new generation to read Thomas Pynchon’s wikipedia page

Hopefully tomorrow blueskiers will have turned away from their insufferable award show opinions and be back to posting their insufferable political opinions

The is no such thing as an Oscar snub. There is only Oscar nonsense.

A big takeaway this year has to be that Sinners and One Battle After Another were big, artist driven, swings bankrolled by WB whose future is ultimately unclear. I like living in a world where people like PTA and Ryan Coogler get to make the films they want to make with those resources.

Jürgen Habermas, influential German philosopher, dies at 96 Jürgen Habermas, whose work on communication, rationality and sociology made him one of the world’s most influential philosophers and a key intellectual figure in his native Germany, has died.

Habermas dead. Arguably outlived the public sphere. apnews.com/article/juer...

Vincent Price vs Peter Lorre in Wine Tasting Contest YouTube video by Dr. Lance Boyle

My daughter is obsessed with Vincent Price, and I had no idea how amazing he was until she showed me this scene from “The Raven” where Price and Peter Lorre have a wine tasting contest. Absolutely without irony one of the great scenes in cinema history.

I’ve decided to be really pedantic about “fewer” vs “less” but only when other people fuck it up.

Bart, does it strike you as odd that Uter disappeared and suddenly they're serving us this mysterious food called "Uterbraten"?

Louis the wheaten terrier barking so loudly it shakes the foundations of reality.

Louis is telling me that these are highly barkable times, and that he will not self-censor just to keep me comfortable.

Althia Raj: Mark Carney is quietly giving sweeping new powers to his ministers Sneaking a change of this magnitude into a 600-page bill that will not get parliamentary scrutiny raises a red flag, Althia Raj writes.

I, for one, find Carney's push for less government accountability and diminished oversight of corporations quite concerning.

I’ve seen a lot of students worried that their papers will get flagged as AI because they’re already strong writers. Maybe that happens! All I can say is, when I suspect that an essay was written by AI, it’s because it’s a real piece of shit.

If you want to become a scholar, you have to read a lot, and some of it will be boring. There’s no “hack” for this, but the promise of one is always going to be tempting.

The playful, prolific use of hyperlinks in online journalism (eg Slate, Pitchfork) didn’t anticipate link-rot. Now so many articles are pock-marked with cryptic allusions that some long-dead link once explained. Weird how quickly a new style comes to feel more archaic than the traditional format

Almost 3x as many Americans consider homosexuality “morally unacceptable” compared to Canada.

Honestly worth studying why a country that shares so much material culture with the US holds on to such different values.

I guess there’s momentary joy, but the replacements are always worse. In a couple of years the entire admin will be made up of dudes who have been banned from Applebee’s.
