The mock up fabric doesn’t need to be chalked up as waste- it can be reused in various ways! Larger pieces get set aside for reuse in future mock ups, some mock ups can get incorporated into the final garment as lining or interfacing, and smaller scraps can be used as stuffing.
It may feel counterintuitive, but mock ups are a crucial part of low waste sewing! By testing fit and working out problems ahead of time, you’ll be able to make the most efficient use of your materials and ensure that the final garment doesn’t end up in the bin for being ill fitting or unworkable.
Lil time lapse of draping the bodice for my @pfiofficial.bsky.social Sew Off challenge. The muslin I’m using here has been salvaged from at least two previous mock ups, and after this I used the draped pieces to refine the fit on my own body.

The display design of this sea urchin work was marvelous - each urchin test was lit from within by LEDs. The LEDs would be turned on and off to showcase the tests two ways.
