It’s here! 🥳👑Jean-Luc Godard’s King Lear is now available @criterion.bsky.social The film has been nearly impossible to see since its brief theatrical run. One of the best parts of working on this was hearing the absolutely wild (& amazing) production stories. Richard Brody on the casting process:

Come for the Michael Small score, stay for the new commentary w/ bts stories—including how parts of the film were shot at Phil Kaufman’s house, where he got arrested mid-shoot for stealing and cremating Gram Parsons' body.

ICYMI: Night Moves—featuring a standout Gene Hackman performance—is one of the darkest, most unsettling films of the 1970s, coming soon in 4K from @criterion.bsky.social Featuring a new interview with actor Jennifer Warren who gives a nuanced turn as Paula. Proud to have produced this one!

In corporate media today we've got layoffs at Vox and the owner of the LA Times interfering in editorial decisions (again) to garner favor with powerful fascists.

Jack & Jill with Amanda Peet and Sarah Paulson! Cancelled after 2 seasons and left us with a cliffhanger! Tragedy.

Subtitling King Lear gave me a new appreciation for anyone who’s ever had to decode ancient texts. For the record, there’s far more Shakespeare in the dialogue than critics initially gave it credit for! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl_w...

Presented in 1.37:1, per Godard's instructions.

There may be more, but Love Streams (available on Criterion) was a Cannon release.

I highly recommend giving it another try w/ the correct2.0 surround track that Godard was never able to have released, and not the garbled mixed down mono that Cannon released. That being said - Godard gonna Godard so the soundtrack is still WILD

Among the many incredible stories - Molly saw the film for the first time at a nearly empty screening at the multiplex at the Beverly Center (!) in LA. One of only two times she's seen the entire film.

Fun fact about Godard's King Lear: It was so obscure that Tarantino used to tell interviewers he was in it, confident no one would ever catch on since the film was nearly impossible to get ahold of.

It was no small feat creating the correct presentation for this late Godard masterpiece. Never before available in the U.S. on DVD and Blu-ray, this new restoration—w/ the original 2.0 surround audio—is a revelation. A huge honor to produce this release. www.criterion.com/films/28773-...
