Afghan earthquake survivors refuse to return to villages, fearing landslides Haunted by the fear that aftershocks could bring rocks crashing down from the mountains, the survivors of Afghan earthquakes vowed not to return to destroyed villages but camp in fields and on riverbanks instead, even without tents to keep off the rain.

Survivors of the 1 September 2025 earthquake in Afghanistan have correctly assessed that rainfall-triggered landslides are much more likely in the aftermath of the mainshock. This illustrates how landslides extend the impact of an earthquake in time and space.

Black and yellow rectangles represent the profile of GPS velocities and location of panel c, respectively. MPT = Main Pamir Thrust, PFT = Pamir Frontal Thrust, STST = Southern Tian Shan Thrust. (b) GPS velocity of profile A-Aโ€ฒ within the black rectangles in (a). (c) is a zoom of the yellow rectangular region in panel (a). Blue and purple polygons indicate the coverage areas of the KH-9 panoramic and WorldView-3 images, respectively. Red, pink focal mechanisms depict the main shock and aftershocks of 1985 Wuqia earthquake, as reported by Burtman & Molnar (1993), Fan et al. (1994) and GCMT (https://www.globalcmt.org/). Cyan dots represent magnitude < 5.0 earthquakes. Epicentres of historical magnitude โ‰ฅ 5.0 earthquakes in the period 1969โ€“2020 from USGS (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/) and Li et al.
