Delivering an ambitious #PlasticsTreaty at #INC52 is vital to secure a healthy ocean and a healthy future, freed from plastic.
Carousel of images with text overlaid: Plastic is often seen as a cheap material, but it comes at a huge cost. in 2015, plastic production cost $592 billion in damages. By 2040, mismanaged waste will cost around $16.9 Trillion. These costs are not evenly distributed. The true cost of plastic is 8 time higher in the Global South. However, just a small number of petrochemical companies drive the plastics crisis. It's time for polluters to pay up. To end plastic pollution, the treaty must deliver equitable funding. This means: a plastic pollution fee for producers to pay per tonne of polymers produced; a new dedicated financial mechanism utilising both public and private finance, fully lifecycle investment in line with the waste hierarchy, comprehensive national reporting requirements to enable investment. The needs of SIDS and Global South countries: 1. stable adequate long-term funding, 2. An additional fund to tackle legacy plastics, 3. Technical and financial support for capacity building, National Plans, and pilot projects. It's time to rebalance the scales. A successful Global Plastics Treaty relies on effective and equitable financing.
Plastic comes at a cost. But who should pay? Β

Currently the Global South bears the burden, despite contributing little.Β

π At #INC5, the #PlasticsTreaty must drive equitable financing to protect communities impacted by #plasticpollution & build a just transition to a circular economy.
