The wording makes sense if you think about it, but terms were used loosely … and then there’s β€œin law”!

I know some relationships can be fluid, esp in census. This is a will with clearly identified relations, most of whom I can match. But the half-brother is my probable ancestor. I’m off to Westmorland this week to scour registers …

Throughout her life, Ruth was known for her quiet strength, her generous spirit, and her unwavering support of those she loved. Whether through her work, her friendships, or her dedication to family, Ruth touched many lives with kindness and grace … woman of deep compassion and quiet resilience. 🀣

Ruth was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, and friend. She grew up by the sea, where her early life was marked by a love of learning, books, and the close-knit community of the Wirral.

Hey #genealogy #FamilyHistory peeps! Has anyone come across the term β€œhalf-brother” C18 being used in a way other than having one parent in common? I suspect I just need to look harder/further …

I prefer the newer one, as I’m sure you hoped. The first is an expanded list of facts (but I like the illustrations). In The second one you have expanded and given some background. I did wonder if it was a bit rose tinted about the early days unless you have family stories of Sunday dinners etc?

Title: Doubts cast on another beloved inspirational tale

Panel 1
Our investigations team has learned that the names "Jack" and "Jill" were invented to conceal a less than salubrious past.
(image of smiling Jack and Jill with a bucket)

Panel 2
The pair claim to have climbed a hill to "fetch a pail of water" but we found a number of water sources much closer to their cottage.

Panel 3
(image of a book with the title "WELL: a memoir" by Jill)

Jill now concedes that her account of Jack's fall and her own "Tumbling After" was intended to convey feelings, not "Cold facts".

Panel 4
Multiple medical experts expressed Surprise that a broken crown was successfully treated with "Vinegar and brown paper.

16% of the UK population was born overseas (21/22 census)
12% of UK prisoners were born overseas
Therefore people born overseas are less likely to be in jail than people born in the UK.
That should be the headline.

That looks interesting. I’ve been put off buying anything like that because I can look up dates, etc, but it looks better than the title suggests. It would be nice with an extra column to write in your own family events.

Among yesterday's arrestees is Deborah Hinton, an 81-year old retired magistrate with an OBE.
That's Yvette Cooper's idea of a terrorist.
Language has been turned on its head.
The law has been turned on its head.
Murdering children is righteous.
Trying to stop it is terrorism.

@familytreeplus.bsky.social it’s clear Nathan was never a student in Leeds or he’d know Skyrack as a Headingley pub. If he’d studied history there, he’d know it was a corruption of β€œShire Oak”. The Original Oak pub is over the road, but the tree isn’t around any longer. Pubs look more upmarket now!
