With Megan Vahsen and collaborators on Sapelo Island collecting cores. The goal is to resurrect ancient seeds from the cores and see how the plants have evolved over time.

After the experiments are done, they need to be cleaned up. Sometimes scientists forget or abandon them. Today we cleaned up an experiment abandoned by a researcher who lives in another country and so isn't likely to be able to clean it up himself.

Study finds early signs of widespread coastal marsh decline Researchers have revealed the declining health of coastal marshes several years before visible signs of decline, providing an early warning and opportunity to protect an ecosystem that serves as the f...

GCE scientists estimated above- and belowground biomass of Spartina along the entire Georgia coast for ten years (2014-2023). A decline in belowground biomass often preceded above-ground loss, making it an important indicator of marsh vulnerability. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2425501122

Pulling out an old marsh experiment that was installed in 2012. Setting the experiments up is more fun than decommissioning them, but cleanup is part of the job.

The GCE implementation of the global DRAGNET disturbance experiment shows little recovery in tilled plots almost two years after the last disturbance. Tilled plots have subsided a couple cm and are a pretty hostile environment for plant growth.
