There are alternatives out there. The smartest thing would be to get on a decentralized platform like @stoat.chat - though it's having issues with so many signups. There's also @rootapp.com that functionally looks and feels similar, though... could go the same way as discord one day.

At some point I am going to have to accept that after work I am mentally clobbered and that is probably why I play MMOs: the tasks are often repetitive, slow, with occasional spurts of technicality/difficulty and easy for my mind to process.

Rock that white! No grays here yet but when it gets to be enough my plan is to dye my hair platinum silver.

relearning to draw, day 3: draw 3 cylanders one behind the other, split in half. shading because I wanted to try.

Found some time, so did the thing. Not been spending as much time in #ffxiv these days, as I've instead been slumming it in a private #WoW server reliving the vanilla era. It's slow, but it's a kind of mindless, wandering zen that's been nice. I've forgotten so much it might as well be new.

Well, my plans to draw every day were futile, when time and energy got in the way. Oh well though. I will still go through the 30 days of drawing but they might be reserved for when I have mental capacity after work.

Day 2 of art basics video: draw 3 shapes and give them thickness. After that I tried to draw a humanoid face but after a good while I determined it wasn't gonna happen today, so I did a cat freakout instead.

Starter excercise: draw a skull as best I can for 10 minutes. Day 1: draw a symmetrical circle nestled within a square. Also with a doodle of G'raha Tia from ffxiv because I wanted to do something else too.

Found a nifty video to help me relearn the basics over the course of a month. To start with, sketch a skull for 10 minutes only for comparison 30 days from now. Then, the day one exercise, followed by a G'raha Tia just because, from reference.

Multiple sketches, 1-3, trying to ease from my normalish style into something more along what I want. All bust/head shots of my ffxiv hrothgar, but with spots included on her face.

Then, lastly, I hide in my house and #gpose up close to get a better look, and try to really mimic what I am seeing and to ease myself into a style I can feel more proud of. I think the third shot turned out the best! I should work on replicating it more tomorrow, energy permitting!

Today, 01/22/2026 I pick it up again and I hope to do it every day here on, though I am skeptical my fatigue will allow. Free sketching while looking, no tracing. The first one I feel like was my early style, so I try again, looking more closely, and this time from another angle.

The next time I picked it up, I decided to do something a little different and do some line art over a #ffxiv screen of my #hrothgar - basically, tracing. So, I don't take too much credit here, as it was largely just trying to train my hand a bit on long, confident lines. This is from 01/15/2026.

So, for Christmas, I drew his #D&D character, a #tabaxi. I am mostly pleased with it, having started on paper and then traced it onto the new tablet, and did as best I could with the perspective and the character itself. The hair is what gave me the most trouble.

I want to sketch every day. That is to say, I want to improve, and I know the only way to do so is to simply do it and practice. I've always had a sort of toony / #furry look to my art as I started as a kid, and I want to move on from toony. But, first thing I wanted to do was make him something.
