Academic turned activist because I think everyone deserves to understand that human beings are born already connected. Always keen to talk ACEs, trauma and attachment -- especially through the lenses of Tigers&Teddies and Fierce Curiosity.

If you can watch this and then think ‘I won’t share because that might be putting myself on the line’ then you know what you’d have done if you were in Germany when your Jewish neighbours were being loaded into to cattle trucks. Nothing. Please share - it’s our ‘I’m Spartacus moments

'Start where you are. Do what you can.'

When the education system demands things that aren't developmentally appropriate, you end up creating issues not solving them. Young children are not meant to be static for long periods of time. If we insist they are, we create 'behaviour problems' that are actually just children behaving normally.

We must create opportunities for collectiveness & community. No one can raise children alone. Part of the problem with our neoliberal, capitalist society is that we created this model of nuclear families where all the adults now work & childcare is outsourced. It doesn't work well.

Petra, I talk & think about this a lot. Both things are true. Parents (mothers) often cope with huge emotional loads / living circumstances and also parents' emotional patterns shape infant development. I talk about shame as one response to knowing this. I hope that helps reduce shame.

Hey Petra. I agree this piece didn't talk about that much. It is why we need to contextualise lives. If you are in the midst of grief or in a scary neighbourhood or in a violent relationshp or workng in a stressful job, those will create tough emotions -- that go on to shape the child's development.

How childhood trauma impacts our brains, bodies – and even our genes War, abuse, neglect and famine leave deep scars, but our psyches can heal.

"One of the most striking findings of this century is that cicrumstances & environment can change genetic mechanisms. This happens through a process called epigenetics."
In other words, trauma leaves a footprint.
