That's not unusual. The Spanish-American War, the Mexican-American War for starters. Charlemagne invaded the Saxons every spring to convert them. They went back to their old religion each time. Personally, I think he just wanted to keep his soldiers from killing each other and stay in shape.

As a coda, I am a Medievalist, not an Americanist. I am appalled by the amount of ignorance of my field. A good parallel to events today is Phillip IV of France. Hearing you and HCR chatting makes me want to compare notes, preferably with wine.
I have also written on this. One clear distinction is that Germans were coming out of a devastating war they had lost. They were in despair and needed someone to blame. Another is that they did not have the example of the horrors of the Shoah. Many didn't know.
