Perhaps - I just feel that there's a danger that they've made social media even more tempting and harder to monitor. For the kids who comply, perhaps there will be benefit.

Absolutely this. There are dozens of ways teens are already circumventing the rule and the most damaging impact of that is that they’re still accessing harmful content but no one knows what they’re seeing. They’ll be less inclined to talk about it to adults so harder to mitigate.

Following Eurovision’s decision to allow Israel’s participation, Spanish public broadcaster RTVE has withdrawn from the contest. The announcement split the screen between Israel’s performance and scenes of bombardment and starving children in Gaza. #Spain #eurovision #genocide

But they don’t refer to the vulnerable they take in (like refugees) as being β€˜on the take’.

Drawing is a tricky one though - it took me years to realise I couldn't see things in my head and other people could - that ability to visualise really helps you to draw. But it doesn't mean you can't be 'good' at art because art is more than just being able to draw/replicate.

If rather than thinking we're good or bad at something, we find the skill within a subject that we are good at or interested in and hone that first, it perhaps gives us the push to tackle the elements that we find more difficult (but that others might find easy).

Is my daughter 'good at languages'? Or was it a tendency to tune into sound which has helped her with languages (and music) and given her an interest/impetus to learn more, which we've supported with travel. So that interest drives her over the humps to persist with the harder stuff like grammar?

01.12.2025 20:57 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes - and language around ability. I think we need to think more about which attributes/interests awaken a perception of 'ability' in some areas. You can't ignore that some people just seem more able at some things. Or that interest is essential in driving motivation. So for example...

The positive messages about intelligence are important because they shift a paradigm of thinking, but that's just opening the door. You won't get far without strategies. But I think people know that it has to be more than 'believe and you can achieve', surely? How did the OECD separate the two?

It's a bit like saying that knowing that exercise is good for you will improve your health. It won't unless you exercise. Similarly having a growth mindset is a good first step, but if you don't know and implement the formative/metacognitive tools that help you to learn, you're not going to get far.

What's the point in banning something that will die out in no time? It's a harmless fad. The quickest way to kill it off is for the adults to start doing it too - our kids are now deciding it's a bit lame.

This is true. My Mum would happily move to a retirement village and it would be good for her. But the conditions attached to it, service charges and the problems we'd have disposing of it when she died have put her off.

All taxes are unpopular. But good quality education, healthcare, social care and infrastructure paid for by taxes are popular. I live in Belgium. If I die here, everything I owned will be taxed at 30%. But then, I'm less likely to have an untimely death because I have great health care etc...

For a man who thinks he shouldn't be held accountable for his teenage behaviour, it's odd that he's put a teenager in charge of Warwickshire County Council.

Dominic Cummings, in an earlier incarnation, ran a secretly-funded 'think tank' dedicated to attacking the Beeb while Robbie Gibb glided effortlessly from GBNews to the BBC & started lecturing staff on impartiality. Imagine (cos you'll have to) how the 'left-wing' equivalent would be reported.

We could write a list all day long - it's so easy to forget what a treasure the BBC has been. I've been really disillusioned with its news and current affairs for a while now, but that's been part of the plan - divide and conquer.
