Is teaching a calling, a profession, or labor? This study maps how 3 institutional logicsβ€”an accountability logic, a democratic logic, and a moral calling logicβ€”shape teachers’ identities.

Screenshot of policy brief that reads: This delay (or outright refusal) to compile a robust COE weakens our nation’s ability to accurately assess the current condition of education and the progress we have made. Policy actors such as the Congressional Research Service use Digest tables. Scholars leverage the COE to explain in policy briefs the effects of K-12 class-size reduction policies or whether an β€œenrollment cliff” actually looms for higher education. The press also uses this data to help the public understand issues like the rise in total cost of attendance at colleges and universities or challenges in the teacher labor market in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Morning! I did a lil analysis and turns out that, when ED employees are illegally fired and contracts are canceled, ED is unable to fulfill its congressional mandate to publish national statistics on the condition of education.

Why does that matter? Well...

This means so much, particularly when SE policy & SWDs are under such real threat. Sharing this with @mayakaul.bsky.social, whose dedication and brilliant scholarship on the teaching profession are so important at this time, makes this award even more special. I'm so grateful and honored. πŸ™Div L!

I'm teaching Ed Policy for Teacher Leaders this summer. I'm inheriting the wonderful Dr. Farley-Ripple's materials, but they're several years old. What should I include in my refresh, particularly in these times? Academic articles welcomed, but also videos, practitioner-facing articles, etc. please!

New from Jen Darling-Aduana, @dave-woo.bsky.social, and me: We observed lessons in an online charter school to understand instructional quality. Despite the school's marketing as an innovative, tailored alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar publics, teachers' instruction rarely reflected this.

The Coalitions We Need to Defend Open Inquiry (opinion) Our research shows that silence in the face of anti-DEI laws only serves to compound suppression, Jackie Pedota and Liliana M. Garces write.

Our research underscores the need for a united front of policy and advocacy organizations, civil rights groups, unions, professional associations, and institutional leaders to defend open inquiry and higher education from growing law-based pressures.

Seems to me what we’re seeing across the federal government are the dividends being paid from years of adopting market language to talk about public goods. Run government like a business? Businesses exist to make profit. Government exists to serve the people. We’re about to see the difference now.

So instructive to climb in the time machine and go back to the OG department of education - in 1867 - it lasted a year before critics argued it was doing to much to help former slaves and canceled it. www.history.com/news/departm...
