Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

I've heard this from multiple established writers also. Just in the five or so years I've been giving creative careers talks, my advice has gone from opportunities lists and grants to "do whatever you can to survive".

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Let’s all remind ourselves of the silent battles, the unseen grief, and the courage it takes to stay.

Let’s break the stigma, speak with compassion, and hold space for those who need it most. Reach out. Listen deeply. Be the light someone might need.

National Short Story Day, Recommended Reads, part 2 | Comma Press

Did you know that here in the UK it won’t truly be β€œnight” until July 22?

With barely 7hr between sunset tonight & sunrise tomorrow, this is the shortest night (rather β€˜astronomical twilight’ πŸ€“) of the year - so enjoy some short stories on us!

Check out my new project! I'm setting up a speculative fiction micropress with a focus on Northern writers. I am EXTREMELY excited but more than a little nervous.

If you enjoy writing or reading literary/experimental fantasy, horror, or sci-fi, following and sharing the press would be lovely!

Mental Health Awareness Week is just over a month away πŸ“…

This year, we’re bringing awareness to the fact that mental health is everything. It’s more than just a small part of our lives. It’s connected to every little thing we do, every place we go and every person around us.

We are disappointed but not surprised that Meta has used millions of pirated books to develop its AI systems.

As a matter of urgency, Meta needs to compensate the rightsholders of all the works it has been exploiting.

But what can authors do? Read here:

Dear UK government,

Let's be clear: our mental health is getting worse, and cutting benefits won’t help.

You claim mental health is being β€œoverdiagnosed”, but where’s the evidence?

The reality is that our environment affects our wellbeing - pandemics, the cost of living crisis, political unrest and ongoing concerns around climate change are all taking their toll.

But when people seek help, they face months, or even years, of waiting.

Rhetoric like this is dangerous. It reinforces stigma and stops people getting support.

If you’re serious about change, listen to those affected. We can turn this crisis around - but only if the government works with us, not against us.

We look forward to hearing from you,

Mind

Where's the evidence that mental health is being "overdiagnosed"?
